Please consider adding sync info to iPad manual!

I’ve only started playing with the iPad version, on a 10th generation iPad. I also have Dorico Elements on Ventura OS for Mac. I am not quite happy with the syncing between the two. And I think it might be helpful to add information about syncing projects to the web help for the iPad version.

So, my kvetches:

1. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong place, but searches for “sync” and “iCloud” in the web help came up completely empty:

I was able to search forum posts to find out how to do syncing - specifically, that I should first change preferences in the iPad version for saving to iCloud; and next, create a new project, which thus creates a Dorico folder inside iCloud. Now, when I am back on my Mac, I can work in Elements with projects created in iPad. Okay, but can we put all this in the manual please? Or if the info is already in the manual, can we please add the obvious index terms of “sync” and “iCloud” to help find it?

2. Secondly, I get a version warning when opening an iPad-created project in Elements on Mac:

“This project was created in a later version of Dorico. Some items and notations may not appear. If you resave this project in this version, any item or notation not supported by this version will be removed from the project.”

The iPad version is 5.1.61.2144, Elements version is 5.1.60.2187. I am presuming that it can be ignored, since it is in Steinberg’s interest to keep the two apps similar. But such a message does not inspire confidence. Again it might be good if the help explained this.

3. Of significance is that using iCloud to sync between the two apps can be troublesome - or at least it has been for me so far. I was surprised that a change in music font, or a note deleted or added, didn’t show up after I switched platforms. And one time my Mac informed me that the project file had changed on disk, after which is asked version I wanted to load.

Now, sure, this seems likely to be a glitch with iCloud not being particularly fast in updating files. In my case I had been switching fairly rapidly from the one to the other as part of my learning process; the cure seemed to be to wait several minutes, after which changes do grudgingly come across between platforms. I think it would be helpful to let folks know in the user manual that it’s necessary to wait at least a wee bit for iCloud to update itself; I can easily imagine that a user in a hurry might not wait, and would therefore run into what I ran into! Again, this sort of info could go into the (possibly non-existent at present??) topic on syncing between the iPad and desktop versions.

Thanks for sharing your experience – I’ll look to provide some relevant information in an updated iPad manual (coming soon).

Wait! Will there also be an update for Dorico on iPad? :star_struck:

Major81,
until now Dorico for iPad has always been updated when the desktop version got updated
(I think once we had a little patch in between - but) in general all Dorico versions are being kept on the same version.

Will there be an Dorico Pro update??? I must say I like how it is, but will buy an update anyway. To support the team :sunglasses:

I’m solely referring to the documentation for the iPad version, which is currently quite behind the latest version of the app.

I was just dreaming :thought_balloon:

Daniel has said that there will be an update coming “relatively soon”.

Note that “updates” are free, as they are bug fixes (and new features) for the current version.

An “Upgrade”, on the other hand, from Dorico 5 to Dorico 6, will require a payment. Version 6 will certainly come along at some point in the future; but nobody know when.

Thanks to pointing me to Daniel’s post.

I know about the difference between “point xy” and major updates. I’m with Dorico since 3.0

I remember, that last year Dorico had to wait for that latest „big“ free update (with Ikonika sketch) because Cubase had to come first (there was some hassle with the new licensing that delayed everything). Even if I didn’t expect an significant update anytime soon, I remembered that and thought they might have decided to push bigger updates near BF and Christmas

But anyway, when Daniel even announced an soon to come update, I assume it will be mostly bug fixes
