Hi all, please advise how to make fade in/out work. When pressing a hotkey, this yellow window pops up. I’ve searched absolutely everything, but I can’t find anything. This is the first time in my life I’m writing to a forum and asking for help. This is very unintuitive, in other DAWs in which I had to work fade in/out was done elementary, not even had to go to the Internet to understand how to do it.
Thank you all in advance for your response!
Hi there and welcome to the form!
A Crossfade can only be performed on audio events, not MIDI data.
If you’re looking to fade in/out your VST instrument, you can try writing or drawing Volume Automation.
How can I do that?
Automation is a simple concept, but has a few steps and options, maybe too many for this kind of forum. With a bit of luck other users here will prove me wrong!
See here:
I can not use the hotkeys that are specified in this guide, It still writes “is not currently avialable”.
What could be the problem, why most of the hotkeys “is not currently avialable”. This is very strange. Every answer would be appreciated, I need to get this problem sorted out ASAP, I have a deadline burning.
Perhaps rendering your VST instruments to audio would be an option in your case. Then you would be able to use audio functions such as event fade in/out and cross fades.
When it comes to automation, there are likely tons of videos on YouTube that would help you get started.
But it is insanely inconvenient and illogical, surely there is no function to do without these completely unnecessary manipulations? In other DAWs I can do this operation literally in one click
That’s as maybe, but that’s the way it is. In Cubase, automation or render to audio are your options…
I suppose it depends on how you see it.
The only real information you’ve given so far is a screenshot showing a failed attempt at crossfade. FYI this is a crossfade and can only be performed using two audio events.
Fade In/Out (in Cubase lingo at least) can also only be performed on audio events (or clips). In your screenshot you are showing two Instrument Tracks. These track types carry MIDI data.
Unless you wish to render your VST instrument to audio, the second best option is probably to create volume automation. Here’s how you can do it with just a few clicks.
Examples? I don’t think Logic can. Reaper might because Reaper can do anything, apparently.
FL, Reaper
I knew it!
I would imagine these do the automation for you, behind the scenes. Cubase just makes you do it yourself.
Thank you so much! You’ve helped me a lot.
This is kind of like the Key Command version of a menu item being greyed out. If you were to Select an Audio Event and then tried to execute a MIDI function like Legato, it would be greyed out in the menu. And if you had a Key Command set to execute the Legato command, you’d get the message you are seeing if you tried to use it on Audio.
You’re most welcome.
Please keep in mind that all DAWs have their strengths and weaknesses. Once you get used to them, Cubase has some really powerful tools and features.
