"Please switch to an Aero theme" on Win 7 (discussion)

Heres an observation with Aero which I don’t think has been raised which some may find of interest.

I use both an iMac and PC in my studio.

I had been looking for a way to use my iMac to display my PC desktop. A solution suggested was running an app on the Mac for Microsoft Remote Desktop over my home Network. And allowing Remote access on the PC.

This worked a treat for everything I used except Cubase 8. Works OK for earlier non Aero versions of Cubase.

The first problem was that Cubase would not open when trying to start it from the remote desktop. The Aero required error message appeared even though Aero was enabled on the PC Cubase was running on.

I could however start it OK directly on the PC which has Aero enabled.

So I tried switching to remote desktop after starting Cubase 8.

This gave me a second problem in that all the menu items on the main Cubase desktop disappeared. All sub windows seemed OK though.

After some research I discovered that in short this appears to be down to the Desktop Composition element of Aero, which will not run across the default Microsoft Remote Desktop. This is supposed to assist The Remote desktop to run better.

To work the PC would need to be running Windows Server 2008 r2 to allow Desktop Composition to be run across a network. Unfortunately Im running Windows 7 Professional and as we know upgrading just to run Cubase 8 would likely bring a new set of problems.

So whilst it may be that use of Aero assists Cubase 8 in being more efficient with the CPU, its use has its down side in being less flexible preventing it being accessed remotely. Remote Desktop could have saved me moving the dongles so often as well.

Would have been nice to have dumped the PC monitor, and just use the iMac as the desktop. So near yet so far.

I had the problem of Cubase 8 not starting up as the desktop was not set to an Aero Theme. I tried to enable the Aero Theme but could not enable transparency and the desktop could only be set a High Contrast Theme. I also discovered that I could no longer run the Windows Experience Index which worked previously.

After a lot of research and headscratching, replacing the PSU and the graphics card, I discovered that the problem was due to Windows Update KB2670838. When I unistalled this update, transparency could be enabled, the WEI ran perfectly and Cubase 8 would also start up, although I experienced many blue screens (BSOD) which I have only seen running Cubase 8 and not in any other application.

I previously had an ATI Radeon HD5770 graphics card which KB2670838 hinted could be a problem, so I changed to a Nvidia GTX570TI but I still need to uninstall the update to make Cubase work.

I wonder if anyone else has seen this problem. I am running Win7/64 bit.

Dig it guys! This is supposed to be a MUSIC program! Not to be run on the conditions of the graphics setting in the computer which for almost everybody on earth running CuBase 8 have MORE THAN ENOUGH to rrun cubase without it telling me what I should be looking at!

I’m so pissed with all the programs that try to tell me what to do with my system MAKE IT NORMAL GUYS :frowning:(((((

I agree with those who don’t like Aero being forced upon us. I also agree with those who don’t like Aero themes because of their complicated ( usually somewhat garish) appearance. It is possible to turn of transparency, and to select a solid colour background though, and thus change the appearance of the desktop to one very similar to a non-aero one. On my relatively old I7 system I have done these things and in general the desktop looks about the same as it did with Aero turned off. For me the system is a tool for running software and so the less I have to deal with the system the better I like it. I can’t say that I have had any instability issues with any versions of either Cubase or Windows since about the XP days, but I have very little experience of W8/8.1 as I don’t like it at all and removed it from my system almost as soon as I had installed it.
Thanks for the opportunity to express my opinion, and for reading it.

Oh the pain  My issue is perhaps more with Nvidia than Steinberg. Gigabyte GT730 (Nvidia) the simple fact is that they have major problems with their drivers and black screens normally using Google as a browser. Nvidia display/kernel mode driver has stopped working and recovered successfully Error 353.0 (Just Google that sentence to see how common it is). This does not occur when in classic mode but happens frequently when using Aero. Catch 22 isn’t it
no Aero no Cubase 8, Aero plus Cubase 8 = blinking screen and display/kernel problem.

Lord above why aren’t things made so much easier . What is Aero = Windows Aero is the premium visual experience of Windows Vista. It features a translucent glass design with subtle window animations and new window colors. Now I find that ironic :open_mouth:

This may be a fix for anyone else with this problem Error | NVIDIA

Being mostly a mac user I may be wrong, but from what I have heard, this is the reason.
Steinberg probably does not want to write two different versions of code for win7 and for win8+.
In windows 7 the technology known as Aero used to be possible to deactivate, but from win8+ it is permanently active. It is simply impossible to turn it off. Thus the reasoning I guess is to write code that only supports this method and not bother with old legacy solutions.

Sounds reasonable yes?

And yes this means that you can’t run with aero off. Get used to it as it isn’t possible in later versions of windows anyway.

Looks like my Aero problem may have been solved with the Nvidia Fix mentioned above if this is the case I can live with it but the header in Cubase looks crappy in Aero and difficult to read. I’ll post up an image in a moment and perhaps somewhere here knows how to tweak it.

Here goes actually the image is easier to read than the actual screen.

I’m not saying accept the current look. There’s a few issues on windows wich just looks weird whith regards to the menus and stuff. So I suggest turning Aero on and banging the drums to get it looking good when using Aero.

This is a non issue, the level of transparancy can be set, so can your wallpaper. Remove your wallpaper and set the windows background in your favorite colour, set the translucent colour in your favorite matching colour. Problem solved!

Still looks crap LOL Hoping the Windows 10 free update will resolve certain issues in the near future but to be honest Aero is not a deal breaker. Like many others I do like the freedom of choice to use it or not and when that choice gets removed it’s nearly always a bone of contention. Onwards and upwards.

Yes, I’m surprised no one else seems to have encountered this issue. It caused me a lot of grief at the time and like you I had to do a lot of searching before I found the culprit although I didn’t replace any hardware thankfully!

This ‘optional’ update dating back to Feb 2013 is needed if you which to update to versions of IE beyond version 9 but for many it seems to completely break Aero. Uninstalling the update is no problem, but you’re then stuck with IE9. Now that in itself hasn’t been an issue up until now because… well there’s Chrome and there’s Firefox etc. But I’ve just encountered a problem today where another app I wanted to run which hooks into IE somehow doesn’t work with versions older than IE10.

Anyone still using IE is a fool
