Plugin for reverb removal?

Hello,

I was checking to see if there was a good plugin for removing reverb from exiting vocal, guitar, piano, etc. tracks. I tried Waves Clarity VX DeReverb. No luck with this.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

There’s a couple of DeReverb functions in Spectralayers. I’m ashamed to say I haven’t tried it in the latest two versions so I have to check that out.

I have been using Acon Digital’s DeVerb plugin with good result, although that has been on dialog and not musical instruments.

Hi MittasNYC,

I’m downloading now. I’ll check it out. Thanks for the advice.

Izotope RX has a quite decent DeReverb, I believe…?

I think I agree. I ended up preferring Acon for dialog, but of course this isn’t specifically about dialog… and I guess both may have algorithms for dialog specfically.

The one thing I will say about iZotope RX though is that the company is not great to deal with and having to have older versions installed just for backwards compatibility is a bit annoying. I much prefer Acon’s flexibility and pricing and so on.

DX Revive from Accentize is absolutely worth checking out. It’s my go-to these days. Has absolutely saved my butt in applications that seemed hopeless… and completely wiped the floor with RX’s various de-verbing modules.

True, but it only works for spoken voices, to some extent with sung vocals, but definitely not with instruments as @mdslammer asked for.

RX’ De-Reverb module works when it works, but its implementation is quite erratic and it produces different results on the same material after re-opening a saved project.

… I have yet to try the one from Acon Digital, though - that’s a great company with remarkable algorithms.

Effing autocorrect.

True. And for that it does it better than anything I’ve tried thus far. Has saved three or four of my remote projects, and I’ve only been using it since March!

Considering how cheap the basic version is (haven’t invested in the “Pro”, as I haven’t found a reason for it), I’ve been recommending it as an essential bit of equipment these days.

“Retain character”, “Natural sound” and “EQ Restore” algorithms are definitely worth the higher price of the Pro-version, especially for music production.

Good to hear. And I expect I’ll probably eventually get around to trying it. Still, the basic version is absolutely doing the job for my colleagues and me, and at a third the price of Pro, it’s a real value. Haven’t been handed anything it couldn’t handle yet. I’m primarily using it on audiobooks, where we receive truly abysmal audio on a fairly regular basis.

On the other hand, I’m presently using it on a pretty complicated historic “separate tracks from a 2-mix” project, and again, it’s doing an awesome job on the sung vocals, both lead and harmony. Once I get the lead and harmony teased away from each other, that is…

In addition to these suggestions, I’d recommend you check out Accentize’s DeRoom Pro as well. That’s usually the first one I reach for.

For Audio Post (not talking about music) this is the very best tool (at this moment) Dxrevive Pro is a no-go, because it fundamentally changes the sound of the recording. In most cases it is simply unusable.
However, I had very good results with restoring badly recorded outdoor dialog and shitty sounding lav’s. In other words, when the dialog is badly damaged.

OTOH, there are cases when these fundamental changes are just what the doctor ordered, e.g. used in split-band mode as an incredible powerful de-pop tool .

Absolutely.
100% agree.

Who knows, maybe this is Accenture’s latest professional service. Call them in for reverb removal, they send in 15 people in suits, take over your studio and the next thing you know you can’t get rid of them and they’re costing you $4M a year.
Gotta love consultants…

Zynaptiq makes various cleanup/signal removal plugins, zynaptiq: audio plug-ins, We use unfilter to clean up badly recorded material, but unveil is targeted for reverb. I think they offer 30 day trials, zynaptiq: UNVEIL

I have SPL’s DeVerb from Plugin Alliance. It’s helpful but not perfect. Still it gets me about 75% of the way there.
