I’m working with a big band composition where I have trumpets in plunger mutes. I have found the plunger mute and the + and 0 symbols in the “Playing Techniques” area just fine. I’m looking for a symbol to indicate a “wah” effect, which is often noted as a +0 over the same note. Is there one I’m missing? If not, how can I create this?
While I have your attention, I’m also wondering if there is a way to get Atomic Big Band Horns to play a “wah” effect on a single note. In the example below I’d like the “wah” to happen on the first note.
I’ve also found that after setting an open symbol (0) the playback changes to open afterwards and I have to create a hidden plunger mute Playing Technique in order for it to return to the closed sound. I think I might have set things up incorrectly, but I followed the demonstration here to set it up. The hidden mute works just fine, it just clutters up the score while I’m working on it a lot, so I’m hoping someone might be able to suggest a fix for this.
Thanks,
Dave
The plunger with that library is just “stationary,” so there is no wah sample:
Thanks, Fred. I too had not found a “wah” effect on ABBH, but was wondering if anyone had come up with a playback workaround. For example, I tried this workaround for the section I postered earlier. I want a “+o” over the first quarter note so that it’s played with the “wah” effect. For playback, I tried this:
It sort of works, but the playback re-attacks the tied notes too much and it’s too long without the “roof top” accent. I could try tying a couple of 16th notes together to get it shorter, but the effect isn’t worth the effort. Since I’m writing for live musicians, my playback demo doesn’t need to be perfect, just good enough.
So while I’m going to give up on the playback, I do need help with the notation aspect to get a “+o” over a single note. If I add both over the same note it places one above the other, instead of next to each other. Is it possible to create a custom ornament? Or is this something I just need to do in Engrave mode?
Thanks,
Dave
I’m at the point now with my project where I’m doing the engraving. Playback aside, can anyone suggest the best way to create or otherwise display a “wah” effect. In other words, I’d like to have the symbols “+o” to indicate a closed to open plunger effect. I also need to do the reverse, “o+,” to indicate an open to closed effect.
Thanks,
Dave
You should be able to design whatever you need, including if necessary a continuation line showing the extent of the effect, in Library > Playing Techniques.
Thank you, that was just what I needed.
