Positioning of accidentals

The positioning of the flat in the example below seems rather unhelpful. Surely it should appear immediately before the note to which it applies?

I’ve looked under Engraving Options → Accidentals but can’t find a setting that controls this behaviour by default. Am I missing something?[Keys part]

One can swap the position offset of the notes in the two voices using Dorico tools.

Hi @Derrek,

This is the first time I’ve needed to reposition an accidental, and I’m not having much luck. :frowning:

In Engrave mode, I can adjust the Accidental X Offset, but this doesn’t seem to affect the spacing needed to accommodate the accidental in its new position.

I’d expected Dorico to adjust the spacing automatically when an accidental is moved, so that everything remains correctly positioned (according to the Engraving Options rules) if the score or part is subsequently reformatted as music is added or changed.

I’d be grateful for any advice on how to position the flat between the F and the E (the music is in the treble clef), while ensuring that the spacing adjusts accordingly.

is this an option?

Change the Voice column index of the notes in Engrave Mode (upper voice 1, lower voice 0)

No, Dorico doesn’t work that way — manual adjustments are applied on top of automatic ones. You could move things yourself with the note spacing tool, but I think @Vadian’s suggestion is better, if the look is okay with you.

Thanks Aaron but I didn’t suggest anything, I’m afraid
You were rather talking about @Derrek or @Vadian

By the way, @rraby, if you want to swap the voice order, the easiest is to select the two noteheads in Engrave Mode, then right-click > Voices > Swap Voice Order (it has to be in Engrave mode in this case because of the tie)

Thanks ever so much for this suggestion, @Vadian - much appreciated.

Changing the Voice Column Index solves the accidental positioning issue, but unlike in your screenshot, the tie hasn’t automatically extended to accommodate the change (I’m viewing the score in Write mode, Page View).

I hesitate to ask yet another question, but how can I ensure the tie looks as it does in your screenshot?

Asking questions is one of the goals of this forum.

Select the first F , press u then t

Thank you for being so encouraging. Everyone on this forum is extraordinarily helpful, and I’m always grateful for the advice. I just try not to impose on people’s generosity by asking too many questions!

Alas, unless I’m missing something obvious (which is entirely possible), recreating the tie hasn’t resolved this second issue.

It could be because your ties are set to “Between noteheads” in Engraving Options.

If so, either choose “Above/below…”, or try to increase this value in Engraving Options > Ties > Avoiding Collisions > Advanced Options (default is 7/8)

Whoops, sorry, replying while multi-tasking, and I mis-recognized the avatar! Yes, @Vadian’s suggestion.

Hi @charles_piano,

Your suggestion has solved the tie issue - thank you!

I’d like to think I’m now a little better prepared for the next time I need to reposition an accidental, although it would be fantastic if Dorico could automagically take care of such adjustments in a future version.
