Also, I would have this tie cross the line a tad, but messing with those settings causes other problems. So, I have been doing a lot of tie editing in Engrave mode.
If anyone would share tie settings that work well for standard piano repertoire, I’d be grateful.
Ties will only be positioned after rhythm dots if they are positioned between noteheads, rather than above or below. You’ll need to change the Ties on Single Notes settings in Engraving Options to Between noteheads if you want this option to apply in the shown situation.
I’ve noticed that I often need to use the “edge of notehead” setting to make short ties look correct, especially in syncopated jazz passages with thick chords. Using “between noteheads” tends to require more manual adjustments, even though that setting ideally distinguishes a tie from a slur. With “edge of notehead,” ties still appear to be placed between noteheads. Regarding tie placement with rhythm dots, I’ve never seen ties positioned on the other side of them in 40 years of music engraving.
Would it be possible to add a setting analogous to “edge of notehead,” perhaps called “edge of rhythm dot,” to better control tie positioning in these situations? To be honest, I’m unsure where the best place to submit feature requests is, and since nothing in Dorico 6 currently addresses other requests I’ve had, I understand the forum may not be the ideal venue.
One of the reasons I chose Dorico was the ability to engrave an entire collection—say, a folio of piano pieces—in one file. This approach simplifies applying editor’s marks and makes global style changes more efficient. However, in collections with varying musical styles, I find that the tie settings don’t always work well across the different genres and styles.
After posting, I realize my explanation of needing the “edge of note” setting for thick chords doesn’t conflict with your suggestion of using “between noteheads” for single notes.
Little by little, I am understanding how settings in different places actually work together.
The forum is indeed the best place to submit feature requests. Either here, or you can email me directly, though it makes no difference either way. You have to remember that there are tens or even hundreds of thousands of Dorico users and only a handful of us working on the software. Although (thank goodness) feature requests are rarely unique to an individual user, nevertheless the sheer weight of requests that we receive and the fact that we can only work on a tiny, tiny proportion of them at any given time means that any individual user may be lucky to see even one of the things they have specifically requested addressed in a given release.
I’m sorry that to date we’ve not implemented anything that you have personally requested, but I hope you will nevertheless find many things in each new version that are also useful to you.
I believe Dorico’s engraving options for ties are pretty comprehensive and it should be possible to get results that are what you’re looking for in most cases, but if you have specific cases that don’t work well for you, please provide full details – ideally, a minimal project file containing just the problem or problems you’re seeing, with a clear explanation.
Thanks for confirming the forum is where to post feature requests, and I trust my feedback history is there for consideration. I understand Dorico is covering a much larger scope of music notation than previous engraving applications, and that it will take time to develop and hone. I support you and your team wholeheartedly and am grateful my thoughts are taken into account.
