Positioning tuplet number with mouse

The tuplet number is too far from the beam and must be moved onto the staff:

But when I drag it in Engrave Mode, it stubbornly shifts its horizontal position:

and I have to move it back into position in the properties panel.

Is there a way to avoid this, other than using only the Properties panel, which I find inefficient?

I’d recommend nudging graphically by using the key commands.

(I do wish Dorico would allow tuplets inside the staff)

I find that when I use the key commands to move the numeral graphically vertically, Dorico moves the numeral horizontally to the right as well, at which point the key commands for moving objects graphically left or right have no effect. To re-center the numeral horizontally, I find (as John says) I have to type values in the properties panel.

Is there any way to prevent this horizontal movement?

Thank you @Lillie_Harris

I prefer to use the mouse for such editing. .For me, it is much faster than using the keyboard. For some functions, I feel that keyboard input represents a backward rather than forward step in using a computer for music engraving.

@Janus indeed. I feel that Dorico is at times producing non-standard output for tuplet numbers and this needs to be corrected.

@Stu_M Thank you for pointing that out.

I feel the same. But this is rooted historically in how Dorico was conceptualized.
Hopefully, the team can have something like a “constitutional assembly” at one point to upgrade their vision and concept for a more diverse user-base in the future.
(I know very well that there have been quite wide-ranging concessions in this regard already, and I also know that focusing on a specific device class in the beginning helped focus Dorico development immensely.)

When you nudge a tuplet number, whether you do it with the keyboard or drag it with the mouse, both the horizontal and vertical positions become overridden, even if you don’t drag the number horizontally. Dorico applies an automatic horizontal adjustment to the number when the tuplet digit has its default position in order to produce an optically centred result, and when the position is overridden, this automatic adjustment is removed.

We do plan to make it possible for Dorico to place tuplet numbers inside the staff in future.

Thank you @dspreadbury

I can’t drag the number horizontally; is there a way to do that?

I see this happening. The X offsets now read 0. But what puzzles me is why 0 is not the optical center, but an off-center position to the right. Since it seems impossible to actually drag the number horizontally, I don’t understand why the default horizontal position is removed. This shift makes it impossible to completely position a tuplet with either the mouse or with the arrow keys.

I am glad to hear that the tuplet position issues will be corrected in the future.

(Sorry if this sounds redundant and is not what you need, but for now, you can change the x values in the properties panel)

Thank you for your support on this @YourMusic.Pro!

Thanks @Christian_R Yes, that is the only way to do this at present. I drag the number vertically and then use the Properties panel to correct the horizontal position.
