Is it possible to have the click during Pre-roll only ?
I’m using Cubase to practice…for example, would place the playhead at the bar i want to work on. When I press PLAY, i would need some sort of a count off. The Click during Count-In option only works under Recording. My other option is to use Pre-Roll, but i can’t find a way to have the click only on pre-roll.
You can activate only the count-in without activating the click. If your metronome section on the lower toolbar is not fully minimized (click the triple dots on the right side or drag it with the mouse) you can see the count-in button next to the metronome button. It can also be assigned a key command.
I think you misunderstood my post…i want a count-in click on playback (not on recording) for practice/rehearsal purpose.
Here’s a simple example…I’m using backing tracks for rehearsal. I want cubase to start playback at bar 9. I place the playhead at bar 9 and hit play (space bar). Now what i want is a count in with click, before Cubase playback bar 9.
On the contrary, I understand what you want completely, but you aren’t going to get a count-in unless you press record. You will still get playback from whatever backing tracks you have, as long as you don’t have record enabled on any of your tracks, there is no difference between pressing record and pressing play in this circumstance, unless there is something I’m missing?
I’ve long wanted to achieve the same thing as you and have never been able to get that to work either.
So I’m still stuck with using pre-roll, including making my own click audio-track for the beginning of songs or other places where the backing track doesn’t lend itself to pre-roll (e.g. tempo or time signature changes or non rhythmic parts just before the part to be rehearsed).
I’ve sometimes wondered, if it might be achievable with a macro, but it would be non-trivial enough, that I haven’t yet mustered the enthusiasm to seriously experiment with that.
Another way of maybe getting close, but also not instantaneous and flexible, might be using the arranger track, where one could program an arrangement that starts with a count-in and then jumps to the part to be rehearsed.
The most obvious work-around might be to record the rehearsing and then delete all of the resulting recordings. But that’s also extra work.
Thanks Nico for the reply…finally someone understands what i’m trying to do
Crazy that Cubase cannot do such simple task without all these convoluted work around.
Anyways, thx again!
Plus 1!
It would be great if the click produced by cubase would be regarded just like a track - so it could be muted and mute could be automated. This would allow to mute and unmute click as needed!
As a side note, or inspiration to someone perhaps, I stopped using Cubase’s metronome years ago and haven’t looked back.
Before the age of DAWs I used a simple drum machine to generate click. Today I use Groove Agent. I have it as a Rack Instrument in my templates with around 20 or so MIDI Tracks connected to it. Each MIDI Track has a project-long event with different click patterns and/or time signatures.
The Audio Output of GA is not connected, instead I’m using a Pre-Fader send to an output on my interface (this output gets distributed to whoever needs it via TotalMix). I have set up a Key Command to toggle the Bypass state of the Send.
The benefits of all this is that I have full control over the sound of the click and exactly when it should be heard.
Your performer wants click in bar 5, 6 and 9? No problem, you can make that happen in seconds. They prefer a cowbell on every odd beat in bar 10-14 but not in the rest of the song? Easy!
