Pressing "Solo" effects all channels

I tried to solo a channel in my project, but can’t get it done… All channels are selected for solo immediately.
How can I fix that ?

Thanks :grimacing:

NotePerformer has its own Mixer, I believe – click the e for Edit Instrument, and mute/solo channels in the NotePerformer window.

Aha - I’m going to check that out in a moment… Dorico just crashed to desktop :smiling_face_with_tear:

it’s getting even stranger… now NotePerformer does not make any sound anymore :sob:

had to reboot the pc to get things working again.
But, indeed, Noteperformer has its own mixer, with Solo and Mute buttons
thanks :+1:

When Dorico crashes it usually leaves the VST audio engine running. You need to kill that process and then Dorico will relaunch without your having to reboot your computer.

I have to say, I find this behaviour very strange.
I also stumbled across this and guessed that it had to do with note performer - but why? I mean, when I “solo” a single player in Dorico, I would expect the result to be only this player’s MIDI events being sent on the way. It should not matter what this player’s instrument is and if other players use the same instrument, because this is further down the line. The result of soloing a player should happen before instruments are involved in the process.

When you mute or solo something in Dorico’s Mixer, you’re muting or soloing an audio output, because Dorico’s Mixer is an audio mixer. For 99% of cases, there’s a one-to-one mapping between instruments in your score and outputs returned by the plug-ins you’re using; NotePerformer is an outlier in this regard (though of course an important one). But since NotePerformer in general requires you to use its own mixer rather than Dorico’s, it’s no different for muting/soloing than it is for anything else mixer-related.

When soloing from within the mixer, I totally understand what you are saying. When using NP, the mixer only consists of a few lanes corresponding to the NP instances.
But when soloing a player I feel that this would mean something different.
As a user, I would like to differentiate between soloing a player (the creater of MIDI events) and soloing a virtual instrument (the creator of sounds, where multiple players might be combined). I believe there could be some room for improvement - especially as NP4 is on its way.

As a sidenote, I find it totally cumbersome that Dorico allows NP to occupy Doricos mixer and do its own thing with it. Especially now on Windows 11, where Dorico and all open NP mixer windows don’t each get their own button on the task bar but are all being combined into one single icon.
I really hope NP 4 will change this.

Whatever NP 4 is like, I am just thankful that Arne made NP available on Dorico when he did and am willing to put up with the way it works to get the benefits it offers.

There is a template available that allows one to use separate instances of NP to feed each player’s Dorico Mixer channel.
