Printable colored background for title page?

For self-publishing purposes, I like to have my title page have a lightly colored background. While I can obviously do that in Word, I’d prefer to do it within Dorico, since one of the things I love about Dorico is that there’s much more flexibility regarding text pages than in Finale. Is it possible to change the background color of a title page so that the color is included in a PDF?

Thanks,
Peter

You could make a small image file with the color you want, then add a graphics frame containing the image to the template for your title page and set the fit mode to “Fill”.

The problem is that Dorico doesn’t let frames extend outside the page margins, which are defined per layout. In order to get the color over the entire page, you’d need to set your margins for the whole layout to 0 and then adjust the placement of all the other text and music frames on your templates.

On the whole, it’s probably easier either to (a) create your title page in Word or some DTP program, or (b) create your title page in Dorico without the background color and then use some other app to add the color as a watermark or background image.

Great info, thanks! Since I believe all my title page text frames are center-aligned, I don’t think the 0 margin would be a problem. Worth a brief shot, anyway.

But the page margins are for the whole layout, not just for one page or template. This would affect all the frames on all the page templates for the layout.

Ah—so in Dorico you can’t change the page margins for just one page?

Correct.

I usually make my preliminary pages – titles, editorial notes, etc, – in a DTP app, and then combine PDFs afterwards.

Yes, that’s how I’ve always done it with Finale. Was hoping to avoid that but not a big deal. What DTP app do you use?

Affinity Publisher will do the job just fine, and very affordable too (no subscription model)!

Ooh, I like THAT! Will check it out. Thanks.
