I wanted to create pdfs for individual players in the orchestra. In Print, I selected all the parts I wanted to save as pdfs.
To my amazement , I had to type the name for each file (e.g., “Thunderbird Suite - Piccolo,” “Thunderbird Suite - Flute 1,”). To make it worse, the first part (piccolo) stayed on the screen so I had to keep track of which part I was on. I need to do ten pieces and each one is for a full orchestra, so this could be a lot of work.
This can’t be the normal procedure. Where did I go wrong?
You can use a filename recipe to generate file names using “tokens”, essentially.
The preview in that dialog is just that, a preview, like an example – the recipe will get applied to each selected layout that you’re exporting, independently.
And remember that the Export Graphics button in the upper right corner of the Print Mode screen is the designated one to produce the best quality PDFs, because it takes advantage of all Dorico’s innate graphical intelligence. The inconspicuous Print button in the lower left is there only for ‘emergencies’. It makes direct use of the print facilities of the OS, with far fewer options.
