Printing with less ink

Is it possible to print directly from Dorico using less ink?

Inkjet or laser? I think you will find laser printers will be cheaper to run if you have an inkjet currently.
Are you only doing proofs and checks?

I am using inkjet. Also doing checks.

You can do your own research, but I found this with a quick search:

which might help, if you are finding it expensive using your inkjet (meaning replacing the ink) if this is what you are actually asking.

There are some more recent inkjet printers designed to use less ink, I believe (and to be refillable). Laser printers generally result in much clearer printing, which would be a plus for careful proofing. If your printed music is going out into the world (beyond just your own copies for proofing), laser printing is the way to go, as the printed pages will be far more durable/less prone to damage from liquids, highlighters, etc.

I have an iPad and a Remarkable tablet, sometimes for proofs I simply send to one of those for my checks instead of a paper print. I have a Pencil/stylus for them and can markup digitally. The new Remarkable Pro has (limited but useful) color.
This way it saves the printer and associated costs.
I use both for other purposes, but the Remarkable is useful for all kinds of checking outside music (it has many of the PDFs related to Dorico and other software manuals etc. so I can refer to them still having a full screen of Dorico.)

Earlier I used Finale and when printing real quick I clicked Print>Setup>Properties>draft/normal/best (quality). Is there something like this in Dorico Pro 5? (I am using a relatievely cheap HP inkjet printer. :slightly_smiling_face:

Sorry I do not think so, but someone will confirm.
Are you able to export to PDF and print from a PDF program that has those settings or has access to your printer settings? or is there a setting in your printer driver/software to specify this? (unrelated to any software printing to it. I know various laser printers I have set up have a setting for a light/eco/draft print mode so everything comes out gray rather than black to save toner.)

Which computer OS are you working in, @Wounded_Knee?

I can’t see any export option to PDF.
I am using Windows 10. :slightly_smiling_face:

PRINT Window menu, Show Right Zone

(I am on Mac at the moment, should be similar on Windows, I did not check)

Ok, arco, I can see the PDF option for export. Maybe I can use that solution. I will try out. Thank you for help. :grinning:

I also wonder if there’s some OS-level print-density utility out there that would come between Dorico and Windows. (I’m a Mac user, so can’t say.)

Thanks for all help. I can export it via Graphics as PDF and open it in Firefox and from there use the HP printer dialog to make a draft-print. :grinning:

Good news then, glad you have a workaround!
Thank you for being courteous

(I wonder if you’d consider giving @arco the :white_check_mark: Solution credit in post 11. Nice to give credit whee it’s due, of course, but also the solution will be promoted to the top under your OP for anyone else encountering it.)

In other news, I’m intrigued…!

(as if it would be any other URL)
(hehe)

I have used one for a few years now.

@judddanby if you have questions about it, perhaps a new thread?

Yeah, I checked it out very briefly after I saw your original mention. Looks pretty interesting!
