Problem with Adat Routing when connecting UR 824 with an Apollo Twin X

Hello

I have an old UR824 and just bought an Apollo Twin X. I’ve connected them using adat and they’re communicating – I’m getting signal. But depending on how I set the DSP, I get the same signal on multiple channels. So, I can plug a mic into Adat channel 1 and the signal also routes to Adat channel 4.

Other times, depeding on how I set the DSP, the first four adat channels get signal.

I spoke with support at Sweetwater, where I bought the Apollo, and they confirm all the setting are correct. And idea what may be going on?

Thanks so much,

Andy

Hi Andy, did you consider the output format? Here’s a quote from the manual:

When ADAT is selected, the OPTICAL A/B
terminals input and output signals of up to eight
channels at 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz, or up to four
channels at 88.2 kHz and 96 kHz, or up to two
channels at 176.4 kHz and 192 kHz. When S/PDIF
is selected, the OPTICAL A/B terminals input and
output signals of up to two channels at any
available sample rate.

Hello Georg,

Yes, I understand this. The problem is that the routing in the DSP doesn’t seem to be correct. Some channels are getting the same signal – for instance, channels 2 and 4 are both giving me the same signal. I don’t understand why this is. I have set the Adat outputs to 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 in the DSPMIX and then set the inputs is studio on so that channel 1 is Adat 1 and so on for all eight channels.

I may be much too late with this but why aren’t you using the UAD Console software to control the ADAT inputs from the UR824? If I remember correctly the Apollo Twin has one ADAT in port and no ADAT out port - is the Twin X the same? I used to have an UR824 I used with an Apollo Twin with the UR824 as clock source but all the channel routing dealt with by the UAD Console. I didn’t use DSPMix as far as I remember.

Steve.

HI Steve,

Thanks for getting back to me. I ended up returning the Apollo and buying a used Focusrite expander (the Scarlette Octopre). It just seems the UR824 wasn’t communicating with the APollo, and a tech frm UAD finally told me that the Aoollo was orig meant to be run on a Mac andm, when demand hit from PC users (like myself) they came up with the X. That might explain why there was so little tech support, in terms of manuals, etc.

Anyway, my setup is now working great. The 824 is the Master and the only odd thing for me – and this has always been the case – is using the DSPMixfx. I never eally used it before, either. I was mainly doing simple demos. BUt now that I can track drums at home, I’m trying to get used to the DSP.

Did you ever use DSPMix? I have some questions about it if you did.

Thanks

Andy

Good to hear you got a working system up and running again. No, I never really used DSPMix very much, other than to initially set up ADAT connections when I had two UR824s and used one as an ADAT expansion. Over several years one of my 824s stopped working fully and I decided to go for the Apollo Twin. . I’m on Mac and used my remaining UR824 with the Apollo Twin as an ADAT expansion so controlled the inputs from the UAD Console software. Funnily enough a few months ago my last UR824 started to give up the ghost after several years of faithful service and I bought a B stock Focusrite Octopre to use with my Apollo. Hope your setup continues to work well.

Steve.
