Does anybody know how to put a DOTTED quarter-note into Dorico Elements 5? Thanks for your help.
Minna_Mansky
Erm? There are numerous ways. Use the left panel dotted note icon, use the double tap method (hit 6 twice), or use the ādotā to modify the note length.
Whether it appears as a dotted note depends on a number of factorsā¦
Dear Janus:
Unfortunately, your instructions didnāt work for me. I should have mentioned that I have a Mac Desktop, and Iām using Dorico Elements 5.
Thanks for your help, just the same.

Minna. Did you ever bother to take the time to work through the Dorico First Steps exercise?
Many of the questions you keep asking are answered there.
Dear Janus:
I have an Operatorās Manual, but it doesnāt explain how to type a dotted quarter note. Here is what it said: "Dotted Notes. Adds/Removes rhythm dots to notes or chords." Itās a rather dumb ānon-answerā explanation; it doesnāt actually tell you how to make a dotted quarter-notes. Meanwhile, I will look at theDorico First Steps exercise.
Iāll try the Dorico First Steps Exercise in the meantime. Thanks again.

@mmm3rdpower, that sounds like a fairly old version of the manual, and the reference page for the Notes toolbox.
There are also step-by-step instructions for how to do many actions, including inputting notes with rhythm dots.
It was the page I was referred to using your new help system!
Sorry Janus, I realised immediately after posting that it was unclear who I was responding to ā Iāve since edited my reply to clarify I meant what Minna was quoting. Apologies!
Dear Lillie:
Thanks for the instructions.
Iāll let you know how it woks out later.

I finally solved the dotted quarter-note problem in Dorico Elements 5.
I notated a quarter-note, tied it to an eighth note, filled in the rest of the bar, and the quarter note turned into a DOTTED quarter note

Dear Lillie:
I finally found one way to get a dotted quarter-note.
I notated a plain quarter note, tied it to an 8th note, filled in the rest of the bar, and quarter-note turned into a dotted quarter-note.
I may have to give up on the other that was converted from Sibelius Ultimate software to Dorico Elements 5.
However, it would great if we could use the dotted quarter notes on the left side of our score.
Thank you for your help.

Minna, Iām so curious. Have you tried to simply press 6 and period? This should create a DOTTED quarter note with less keystrokes than tying a quarter and eighth note.
No reason this could not have been added onto your prior thread, Minna.
This is a key behaviour in Dorico: every time you input something, Dorico will notate the current state according to the metrical rules that are in force. That means that rhythms can change as you input music. So trust that Dorico will do the right thing, and keep inputting music: there is a good chance that when you have finished inputting music into the bar, it will look the way you intended. If not, you can adjust the settings in Library > Notation Options to change the rules that Dorico is following.
Iām having a similar problem here. I have tried to turn a quarter + eighth note tied into a dotted quarter note using all of the above advice and nothing has changed. Even making changes in Notation Options did nothing to fix this. Are there any other ways to go about this?
Yes. Please see force duration in the manual, and/or search the forum for āforce durationā.
Dear Mark:
Thanks for your help.
