I use Dorico for some months now and I’m very happy with all the features in comparison to Finale, although I loved working with Finale too.
But there’s one issue that frustrates me terribly and that is that after using Dorico very often the Finder doesn’t work anymore. Other programs don’t start, I can’t empy the trash, I can’t replace documents to other folders, I always have to restart my (Apple) computer to make sure that things work properly again.
This problem didn’t occur before I used Dorico, so I think Dorico somehow causes it.
Does this sound familiar to other users? What can I do to solve this problem?
I think it’s very unlikely that Dorico would interfere with the working of the Finder. The problem may have started around the time you installed Dorico, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the two are connected. (Or not directly; some third factor could be involved.)
Can you not just Force Quit the Finder, at least?
What Mac do you have, and what OS version? Is this issue 100% reproducible? E.g. Restart the computer, launch Dorico, use it; quit Dorico – Finder doesn’t work?
Does it happen if Dorico is still running and you switch to the Finder, or only when Dorico quits?
What other software do you use ? Do you have any other audio VSTs?
When the problem occurs, does the mouse pointer still move? Can you switch to other apps? Can you check to see if there are any alert windows that might be hidden behind other windows?
That doesn’t help unfortunately
I have an iMac, 27 inch, Ventura 13.7.1. No possibility to upgrade to Sonoma (2017)
I’ve installed BBCSO Discover and Acoustic Samples VHorns
It could be a *running-out-of-RAM" problem.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/
and select the Memory tab to check the Page Outs. If it’s quite high there is not enough RAM.
Oops, that’s very technical. I’m anxious to change settings in codes like that.
It’s not about changing settings. It’s about reading parameters.
Can you explain that in more detail? You can Force Quit the Finder, but upon restarting, it’s still problematic?
Yes, Vadian’s suggestion is to launch the Activity Monitor app, which is in Applications/Utilities.
This will show any ‘unresponsive’ processes (in red), and under the Memory tab will show you how the memory is being used.
Leave this app running and then switch to it when the problems start.
Any screenshots you can provide would also be helpful.
Ok, I’m in (Activiteitenweergave (dutch).
Memory: Dorico 766,7MB
Is that high?
Iin comparison to other programs it looks very high.
VST Audio Engine uses 1,19GB
After restarting everything works normal.
Could installing more RAM be the solution?
Can you explain about Force Quit still doesn’t fix the problem more?
Your memory usage looks OK – though you are using Chrome, which is well-known for using large amounts of RAM and CPU. (On top of the personal security issues.)
Is the Finder problem happening when you took the screenshot?
More RAM is always better, but I’m not sure that your limited RAM is causing the problem.
One other thing: do you have the Fusion drive in this iMac? A 7-year-old hard drive might be failing, and that could definitely cause problems in the Finder. Make sure you have a backup.
Open Disk Utility and run First Aid on your disk.
Thanks, I will try that.
Actually I have been recently dealing with another customer with exactly the same problem, but could not get much further with him.
He also can’t get other programs going any more, at least not via Finder.
We made a test where he prepared a Terminal window and in there prepared to launch another application via command line. Then, when he ran into this funny state, he went to the Terminal window, hit the enter key and was able to launch the other app. Launching that other app via Finder was not possible. So from that we deduce that it is somehow a problem with the window manager, but could not get any deeper any more.
But could you do the same test at your end as well?
Making a screen shot is something that I do a lot (after making an arrangement of a piece). I use those screen shots on my website www.viersaxen.nl to show the first page of the arrangements. That might be causing Finder problems…
So maybe I should avoid that and see what happens then.
(Thanks by the way for your effort to solve my problem).

Joost

Hi Ulf,
Thanks for your reply. It all sounds quite complicated. I’m not a very technical person, so I’m not sure that I dare to do the test that you propose. Maybe we’ll find another solution. More people have responded, so I will wait some more.
Regards,
Joost

Hi Ben,
I ran the first aid program. No problems there.
Someone suggested that the problem could lie in the fact that I’m making quite a lot of screen shots (necessary for my website…). That is something that I didn’t do before. Maybe that causes the problems.
I will stop doing that and see what happens.

Joost
