Problems with New MSI Desktop

New MSI Desktop Codex R using Windows 11 and Intel 12700 chip

Hi. Any help here before I contact MSI would be appreciated. I run Cubase 12 Pro. I have Windows 11 set to high performance mode, and Cubase is set to High Performance and ASIO Guard is engaged. My problem is that with this new Intel chip (20 threads), I should be able to run at least 16 tracks without any kind of glitch, but my system is crashing with only 12 tracks (only two have a chain that really uses CPU). The Task Manager says I’m using about 20% of the CPU which seems high to me. Is there a secret to optimizing Cubase, Windows 11, and the Intel CPU so they work to actually help me produce music, instead of countless hours trying to run down a problem I shouldn’t have. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

Share the DMP file(s), please.

I would also recommend to test the system by using LatencyMon utility.

Do you have a new machine with this processor, or did you just exchange the processor of your computer, please?

I have a new machine. Just purchased. I’ll have to locate the DMP files. As soon as I do, I will forward them. Thank you.

Hi,

On Windows the crash dumps are located here: Documents/Steinberg/Crash Dumps

Please check:

  • If there are any issues in Windows Device Manager with device conflicts or any appeared warnings/errors
  • Check your motherboard vendor support website for latest driver updates
  • Check if there are new Intel Management Engine firmware and BIOS updates for your motherboard
  • Check your BIOS settings if you have enabled XMP profile for your RAM and other BIOS settings which could affect CPU and system performance - Turbo Boost, C-states, Power mode etc…
  • run in Windows Command Promt as admin each of those commands:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

sfc /scannow

  • In Windows Control Panel go to power settings and check your High Performance power Plan sub settings:
CPU power management minimum and maximum processor state is set both to 100%
PCI Express Link Power Management is set to Off
    disabled USB selective suspend
set Hard Disk turn off to never

  • Also try to uncheck in Cubase Power Plan and instead use only Windows High Performance Power plan.

  • Try to check latency settings in your audio interface ASIO panel and set to 128, 256 or 512 samples and check if that minimizes problem

  • Try to download and run Windows Latency Monitor application to see if issues persists.

I hope some of that could help you. I use my 12700K with Win11 Pro and I dont have any performance issues at all. And this CPU should allow you to make huge projects with hundreds of tracks without any issues in Cubase. 12700 is very powerful CPU and cabable to run really huge projects.
And I hope you will sort out your issues as its not normal behavior for this CPU as you described.

Hi Martin:

Here is the message Google gives me when I try to attach the dmp files.

Cubase 12.0.52.393 64bit 2022.12.4 7.57.13.232-freezedump.dmp is 0 bytes, so it will not be attached. Please re-attach your files again without it.

This is a brand new computer. It has the Intel 17 12700 chip. It should be able to run 20 threads. The system operates at roughly 4.5 Ghz.

Thanks for any advice. Is there another way to get these dmp files to you?

Regards,

Joe

Thank you. I will work on these suggestions.

Hi,

Is it the case of all freeze files you have?

Hi:

Yes. I’ve had 4 freezes since I purchased and setup the computer on November 24th. They all show 0 bytes. Two occurred on November 26th, and the other two I believe were December 6th.

Regards,

Joe

Also might be useful maybe to check the Windows Logs for warnings / errors ?

Will do. Thank you. So far, the only action which has reflects a change to my setup was to disable Steinberg Power Plan. Too early to tell if it has made a difference. I left the multi-thread capability intact.

My thanks to all who have offered ideas.

Joe
