Problems with simple 3:2 triplet entry

Having problems entering 3 eighth note triplets in the space of a quarter note. Notes are entering incorrectly as Quarter notes, not eighth. When I try to correct to eighths, it bumps triplets into the next beat(s). Proper entry is 3:2, right? I would love to post Ex. 1 and Ex. 2 to this forum, but can’t figure out how to do that. Also having trouble with searching “help” for many topics because the terminology is so different from Finale.

Welcome to the forum!

When you type 3:2, make sure you have the eighth note tool selected—or type 3:2e. You probably have the quarter note tool selected.

A tuplet is x of something in the space of y of them. You need to tell Dorico what “something” is, either by having that tool selected or specifying it in the popover.

You can just take a screenshot and paste it into the edit box.

Just spend some more time on the forum, and more features, including image posting, will become available to you. Here’s a link explaining the various levels:

Hi Aaron,
Thanks for responding. After searching “help” (*), the forum and mostly messing around for hours, I finally managed to enter the triplets correctly.
Now I wonder, why does the organ part play with a violin sound? Project is attached. (This is all I have to show after 6+ hours of uninterrupted work).
I am trying very hard to learn “the Dorico way”. I have now attended 3 livestreams and completed the Dorico First Steps project. Unfortunately, these lessons don’t stick because the program is so unintuitive for a longtime Finale user like me.
(*I’m even struggling with “help”, because the terminology is so different from Finale. It’s tough finding help when you don’t know the Dorico term for the thing you need help with). Super frustrating!!!
Anyway…why is my organ player sounding like a violin?

Oops, I see that Dorico omitted the instrument names that should mark each staff. The instrumentation is:
Violin
Trombone
Organ (3-staves)

When I open up your file and play it back, the organ sounds like an organ. I did not make any changes.

That’s because you told Dorico to do so (Layout Options>Staves and Systems>Staff labels…)

(OT: @dspreadbury Is there a reason the factory expression maps for Organ is set Default? I would have thought it a perfect candidate for CC11…)

Nope, no reason for “Default” organ setting AFAIK. Like the Staff label weirdness, it appears to be random. (I swear, I haven’t gone anywhere near the Layout Options, Engrave or Print mode yet, because I’m still struggling with basic note entry). :grimacing:

If I create a new file and specify your instrumentation (violin, trombone, organ (3 staves), I get those instruments and their names:
