Programming DMX Lights

I’m having a hard time finding information on this subject. What is the process of creating a dmx light show? Does it require a plugin?

Edit More specifically, how do you trigger a light? If I had this information, I could probably figure the rest out. The manual states “The DMX track is like a Midi Track”, I just don’t know how to go about entering the “notes”.
