A client came into studio today and brought a Mac Mini running logic to export files out of to work on on my Cubendo system (PC). I was taken aback when opening his Logic projects on the mac. They opened within a few seconds. Lots of plugins, VST instruments and maybe 20-30 tracks.
In comparison my Cubendo system on a PC (10900x and 32gb RAM off an m.2 SSD) takes maybe a minute to load with something similar in the Cubase world. Its obviously apples and oranges but has there been any more scientific comparison on project opening times between these DAWS? I also noticed something similar with Studio One when another client came in. Cubase seems to take a very long time to open semi complex projects.
I’m using Logic and Cubase on MacOS Sonoma ( M1 Max MacBook Pro ), Logic Projects load and unload waaay faster the Cubase projects.
And most importantly, when a plugin crashes in logic it doesn’t crash entire project but only the plugin.
But if for some reason entire Logic crashes it auto-saves right before the crash, so you never lose your work.
Oh! This definitely looks like something I would heavily vote for Steinberg to improve. I imagine it might be a big decision point in choosing a DAW.
Reaper also loads really quickly, especially start up. From clicking on the program icon to being in a project ready to work is a few seconds. If your project has lots of samples or smple base plugins like acustica then it does take longer to load a project in any DAW.
Apple silicone does well with this as it’s all new code and the memory speed on the new macs is very fast.
