Project location problems in hub configuration

Don’t know if more people are having this. I’m on Mac OS 15.7.1 and Cubase 15 is having problems to work with my project location and project folder correctly in hub configuration. Or I’m not understanding how the new hub system should work.

In Cubase 13 I’m able to set a default location (including a general folder that I put all my Cubase projects folders) and input a name for the sub folder for a new project (and every Cubase special folder for that project will be created inside it, like audio, track pictures, and so on). When saving, the new session file will be inside this sub folder too.

In Cubase 15 if I choose a default location (like a general folder inside documents folder named “Cubase projects”), Cubase 15 will create a sub folder named Cubase projects-01 even if I keep the folder name field blank.

What am I doing wrong? In Cubase 13 was working fine.

Maybe this was a Mac specific behavior. This definitely is not happening on Windows. You will always be prompted where you want to store the project file.

What happens if you fill out the folder name field (like you did in C13)?

I am on Mac and have experienced unexpected behaviour too. I have been on Cubase since Cubase 8 and to my memory there has always been ‘promt for project location’ option or something similar. Then every time you create a new project it would ask you to create a new folder within a specified location. It seems now for Cubase 15 that if you select ‘default location’ then it does not offer to create and name a new project.

Anyway I have unselected ‘default location’ and it prompts me to create a new folder as usual. Possibly do the same untill its fixed or explained by someone. Thanks for posting.

You’re not doing anything wrong. The new hub just has different behavior.

(EDIT: made “iCloud Drive” consistent and changed language)

If “Use Default Location” is NOT enabled, then each time you click “+ Create Empty” you will get a folder selection dialog box to choose which folder you want the project to be saved in. Note that this works with “classic” macOS “last folder opened” logic. The last folder you chose when creating an empty project will be defaulted to in the “open” dialog the next time you create an empty project, and this persists through app launches (again, when Use Default is disabled). One should note that when this mode is used, the default “sub-folder” structure for Audio, Mixdown, Auto Saves, etc apples TO THE FOLDER YOU CHOOSE. No “project subfolder” is created. If you choose a “common” folder (e.g. /iCloud Drive/Documents/CubaseTemp) to work from, then your project .cpr files will be in that folder, and Audio files will be in /iCloud Drive/Documents/CubaseTemp/Audio just like before.

If you enable “Use Default Location” however, then all project files default to a “Project Subfolder” as you’ve seen. By way of example, if you use the above folder structure for the Default, and you’ve selected the Folder Name of “myProjects,” when “Use Default Location” is enabled, then when you go to save the project you will ALREADY HAVE an /iCloud Drive/Documents/CubaseTemp/myProjects folder created and (in my case since I created an Audio Track) and Audio folder:

All good so far. Project saved, and life is good. Now when you go to “Create Empty” again, and start working, then the project folder of “myProjects-01” will have automatically been created, with an existing sub-folder structure for things like Audio, Images, and Auto Saves (depending on your setting).

If you don’t change anything, your projects will continue to populate in:
/iCloud Drive/Documents/CubaseTemp/

with project folders automatically named:

myProjects
myProjects-01
myProjects-02

until you decide to change it. So you weren’t do anything wrong at all, it’s just different behavior. Importantly, note that if when Use Default is enabled, if you choose to use a DIFFERENT folder to save your .cpr, then your Audio, Auto Saves, etc still use the project sub-folder structure specified in Project Folder Name. So if you “Command+UpArrow” to force the .cpr to be saved right in the /iCloud Drive/Documents/CubaseTemp/ folder, and you had audio in that project, the audio will still be saved in /iCloud Drive/Documents/CubaseTemp/myProjects-xx/Audio folder.

‘twer I to hazard a guess as to WHY this behavior has changed, it so that all default project files will already have a saved directory structure in their own unique folder so that future feature-sets around Backup Project can be improved upon. Many people have had feature requests to Backup a Project as a replacement for “Save/Save As” functionality as their “first save” option, so I can see how setting up a default file structure would facilitate that feature when people choose to use “Default Location” options.

In my opinion, since SB created the “Web Content” links in the hub, and included a video from Dom on “How to get started with Cubase in 10 minutes,” I think the minimum they could have done is have him show people how to use the new File Management features in the Hub, and not just the “create empty” folder he showed. To me, proper file management is a core functionality, and its effective use is critical. NOT having explicit how-to material immediately available right in the hub where you need it. The Cubase Help link does take you to a web page where you have to select Cubase, then search for Hub, and then read the “Save” instructions, but it doesn’t go into the detail I have above, which I think is a lost opportunity. Not being unnecessarily critical, but it’s perfectly reasonable to expect some manner of readily assessable, complete information in this regard.

I see now. Thanks for you great explanation! Now I’m using my default location and BEFORE choosing a template (or even a new empty one) I insert the project folder’s name in the field and close it.

Maybe Steinberg could move that part of the configuration to the main hub window (avoiding an extra click every time when creating a new project using specific info).

Indeed, and agreed. I actually like this behavior much better. Sometimes I’m in “get ‘er done” mode and very structured with my folder approach, and others I just want to be creative and save stuff in my CubaseTemp folder and write. This feature will let me do both without thinking about. Very cool IMO and looking forward to Nuendo 15 to have the same features.

Agreed. They’ve added unnecessary steps to a process that should be quick and easy. All they need to do to fix this is move the Location section of the Hub Settings to the main Hub window.

It is not just an extra click, it is an extra click to open the settings, orienting in the settings context, finding the right setting, clicking there, closing and finally adding the project. This is horrible.

Yes C15 has an unnecessary bump in the road at a critical point in the workflow. The location info needs to be moved from the hub settings to the main hub window. Hopefully we’ll see that in the next update.
