QUAD 4.0GHz, or a 6-Core 3.5GHz ?

Im looking to buy a new machine, solely for music production where I mostly score to picture so I need to run video as well.

What is better? A higher speed that can over clock itself to 4.4 GHz but lesser cores (Quad 4.0 GHz i7), or more cores but cannot over clock and has lesser speed (6-core 3.5 GHz)?

All input is much appreciated!

Thanks,

Alex

Part of me says go with the quad core. If you were doing video rendering, I’d say do the hexa-core. But I also want to hear…read others chime-ins.

Could you please specify processor models? It’s impossible to make comparison with information you gave us.

I suspect a detailed answer requires detailed research. Scott from ADK posts here sometimes and as a PC DAW builder he has a lot of data from his own tests.

Which hex core model? the 5820 is advertised in some builds on an Asus X99 board clocked at 4.2Ghz (for example http://www.scan.co.uk); so that might be better than a 4.0Ghz four core even if it can overclock to 4.4Ghz.
