Quaver (eighth note) beaming

Hi All,

I’ve gone through Notation options but can’t find a way to change this.

I have a rhythm where (in a bar of 4/4) I have an eighth rest, followed by an eighth note, then on the second beat, an eighth note followed by an eighth rest. Dorico is insisting on beaming the two 8ths together, but as I then have two 8ths making up the third beat of the bar, this looks initially rather confusing to read.

What option can I change in settings so that the first to 8ths of the bar don’t beam together?

Thanks,

Daniel

This is what I get with default settings. Or did I misunderstand something?

Jesper

No, that’s exactly what I want! However, it’s not happening naturally. I must have changed something somewhere along the years in settings, I just can’t find it!

Daniel

You could use the Library→Library Manager. Compare to Factory settings, and reset the Note and Beam groupings under Notation Options.

Jesper

Thank you - I’d never delved into Library Manager in Dorico before.

However, having reset everything to factory settings, it still shows those first two quavers beamed, even if I delete and redo….

Dorico 4, btw

Could you post the file? You can PM it to me if you prefer.

Jesper

Also, are you sure it’s a regular 4/4 and you didn’t enter [2+2]/4 or something?

I have just realised it’s Cut Common, not 4/4……..silly me.

Are the options for that found elsewhere?

Then tick “Use common time note grouping” in the properties panel.

What do I need to have selected to get that in the Properties panel?

The cutc time signature. But changing that will rebeam everything so I thing if it’s just bar 41, it’s better to just right-click and Beaming→Split Beam.

As you can see, I made a shortcut for it.

Jesper

Use Common Time note grouping doesn’t seem an option in Dorico 4, so for now I shall have to just split beam there - it’s not affecting much else in the piece so it’ll have to be manual.

Thanks for all your help! Many new things understood now.

Ah, not sure when that was added. Glad I could help.
