Question about forcing tied eighth and about lenghtening tied notes to certain value

Question 1: in example 1, I want to have an eighth note (second eighth note in beat two) tied to the next eighth note (first eighth note in beat three), to have a more readable syncopated phrase. Somehow, Dorico does not allow me to do this.
Question 2: in example 2, I want the E on beat one to be a half note duration, but somehow Dorico does not allow me to do this. The only thing that works is to erase measure two, delete the last eighth note of measure one, replace that with an untied eighth note, then write the half note E on beat one in measure two, and finally, tie the half note to the previous eighth note. But that seems cumbersome. Anyone a better way to go about this?

Welcome to the forum.

Assuming you want this…

For problem one, you probably want Notation Options>Note Grouping to split the syncopation across the half-bar…

For problem 2: Set your rhythmic grid to eighth-notes. Select the E and use shift-alt-right arrow to lengthen the note.
[this key combination will lengthen any object that has a duration and is very useful]
