Question about Nuendo vs Cubase

I have Cubase 10 and I’m looking to upgrade to Nuendo. I really want the midi remote integration that was added to Cubase 12 though. Does Nuendo 12 include that?

If not, are there other general features missing from Nuendo that I’d likely have been using a lot in Cubase?

Nuendo has all Cubase features.

Nuendo lacks VST Transit integration, though that is a moot point as Steinberg is discontinuing VST Transit at the end of this month.

You can get a trial licence for Nuendo 12 to experiment.

As @steve implies, Nuendo is pretty much a superset of Cubase Pro. Nuendo lacks VST Transit support, though that is moot because VST Transit closes for good at the end of this month.

I believe there are still four potential issues with crossgrading Cubase to Nuendo:

  • unless you update to Cubase 12, you do not have a Cubase licence after the crossgrade
  • at one point, Nuendo would refuse to open Cubase files saved by editions lower than Cubase Pro - I do not know whether this is still the case
  • Nuendo cannot save .cpr project files - I think you can open .npr project files in Cubase Pro so long as you don’t use any Nuendo-specific features, but this is something to check
  • I believe the VCA implementation might be different in Cubase and Nuendo.

It is possible that some of these issues are no longer current - it has been several years since I had a Cubase licence and I have no need to work with Cubase users at present.

The Nuendo trial should be sufficient to investigate my last two bullet points. Whilst I can understand Steinberg maintaining the distinction between Cubase and Nuendo for marketing and support reasons, there is really no excuse for needless incompatibilities between Cubase and Nuendo.

Thanks. I’ll probably use the trial to get a more in depth idea of what to expect.

I will be interested in your feedback. Thanks.
