Question on routing

Hi all, Happy Friday!

As an older engineer, I miss sitting down while a print is being recorded, and make notes as it plays back, without stopping to fix anything, as this is near the end of the mixing stage. I like the change in mentality when forcing myself to just sit and listen to the print from beginning to end.

I want to see if someone here has figured out how to listen to final mixes, aka not use the “mixdown” feature, but print your mix onto a track, and then sit and listen as it goes down. Every now and then I’d like to sit and listen to the final mixes as they print, making any final notes or mastering notes as it plays. I do the same for the stems, sometimes catching small issues with rogue transients etc. that I can then go back and sort out before final delivery.

Export Mixdown well it’s fast but does not allow for real time listening to the print. I have to import the mix and then listen to it, then delete it if there is some issue I don’t like. Time consuming for me to do that, even though it can be a feature in the Export Mixdown window.

How do you do this? Thanks in advance.

In Cubase one can just create a group sub-mix bus and use the output of that bus as the input for a new audio track. When I started using N14, I found I couldn’t do that anymore. AI told me to use CR to create Monitors along with a Loopback Bus but I just opted for my UAD virtual channels. It’s way easier for me and operates at the Audio Connection level rather than different CR configs.

Not sure if you have an UA/Apollo device but it works great for me.

Either this …

… or you just use the output of your mix bus as source for an audio track. Just make sure that it isn’t routed to the mix bus.

Oh, that’s a great solution too!!

No idea why this didn’t work when I first tried it. But I just did it again after you said that and it worked fine. Thanks.

So similar to other DAWS, where I use a Stereo Buss to feed into an audio track. My head is still trying to figure that out in Nuendo but I will try this.

Thanks!

Thanks Thor. I am not using UAD hardware, Focusrite Dante instead.

I am using Control Room for monitoring, not sure how to make a “loopback bus.” But will investigate.

Actually @Dietz hit the nail on the head. If you won’t want to go through the export process, you can indeed route the output of a group track as the input to an audio track. You’d need to route to a sub-mix (group) first on your tracks, and from that group to your main out, but then you could just record “in line” on the track you want to use for your “live print” of the mix.

I tried this first and for whatever reason it wasn’t available (or I didn’t see the group track at the bottom of my other channels) but it’s right there

You need to unassign the newly created track to the outputs first (or create it with no connection), otherwise the DAW will prevent you from loop routings.

I just create a ’ TMP-GRP’ group track with no connections and feed my main Stereo Master Out to it. Then I use that group track as the input to a new Mix Master track.

I use a MOTU 8A, that allows routing internally to effects and mix busses.

There is no summing available that I am aware of but it allows me to create high-definition stems and multitrack files, that I can later mix using, you guessed it UAD.
