Is there any way to put a tie OR a slur without using the engrave mode to adjust a slur if I want to tie a note that was previously tied to another note? For example, it won’t let me do simple ties without grabbing a group of notes:
@brianjmark
I am not sure if I understand your question, but to prolong the tie chain (for example to tie also the 6th and 7th note of your example), just select the existing tie chain and keep pressing T until all desired subsequent notes are tied. Eventually you may want to use (locally) Force Duration if you want to maintain the written rhythms, or change (globally) the Notation Options/Note Grouping appropriately)
Can you please explain more clearly what your final result should be?
Hi Christian, I am not sure how to answer this, as I don’t have freedom of ties that I had with finale.
Please post at least an example (screenshot) of a tie chain that you made in Finale and that you cannot reproduce in Dorico.
Here the Manual:

Hi Christian,
Like I mentioned, I don’t have the freedom of ties that I had with finale. It seems I have to put in a slur and manually change it, same problem here if I simply want to tie the quarter note on the third beat onto the eighth note onto the fourth beat. The program won’t let me, as I have to put in a slur to look like the second picture, and then I have to manually change the slur.
@brianjmark
Try this:
- select the note in the second beat (the tie chain is selected)
- press O to force duration
- press T to extend the tie chain to the last eight note without changing the displayed rhythm
Here another (a little advanced) method:
Here the Manual about Force Duration:
Did this helped, @brianjmark ?
Brian, in the property panel you can specify, where the slur starts and where the slur ends.
There are also global settings in Engrave Mode.
Procedure
- Select the slurs whose position relative to tie chains you want to change. You can do this in Write mode and Engrave mode.
- In the Properties panel, activate the following properties, individually or together, in the Slurs group:
- Start pos. in tie chain
- End pos. in tie chain
- Choose one of the following options for each property:
- First note
- Last note
From the help pages:
The title should be: how to adjust slurs in a tie-chain? And the answer is then obvious : Engraving options>Slurs for a global setting, Properties panel>Slurs locally, as @k_b has demonstrated.
