Questions about entering a score into Dorico

I’m entering a score into Dorico. I’m still a Dorico newbie: I’ve never entered anything other than solo instruments, one per staff.

The PDF of the score shows staff labels that I’m not sure how to enter. For instance, "2 Oboes (and Cor Anglais) that all share the same staff. There are a number of other labels in the PDF that I’m not sure how to notate in Dorico.

There’s also a reference to Violincelli ripieni. Not sure what that implies. A tasty pastry?

I’ve attached an image that includes some of the labels from the first page of the score. (I used Photoshop to remove single instruments, so there are some gaps, and missing instruments).

I presume the 5 staves for Violoncelli Soli indicate 5 cellos playing different parts. I suppose users with more trombone experience (than I have) will know which trombones are being specified.

Ripieno just means the rest of the section. I think you’re right about the trombones.

The Oboes are condensed. The way to do this in Dorico is: In Setup, create the 2 Oboe players, and add an English Horn instrument to the 2nd player (so it holds both instruments). Write the Oboe 2 and English Horn music on the appropriate separate staves in galley view; in page view Dorico will show one staff, and indicate where the player switches instruments automatically. Going by this screenshot, you’ll have 23 staves in galley view, one for each instrument (or section).

Then, with Edit > Condensing on, Dorico will allow the 2 Oboes to share a staff in the score, and automatically split the English Horn onto a second staff.

Tip: Leave condensing off until you’ve entered all the music! because it can slow down Dorico significantly in a large score.

The brass will be condensed also. Since there are 4 Horns, in 2 different keys, this will be more complex, and you’ll have more questions. Search the forum for the many threads about condensing – and come back here if you don’t find the answer!
