Quick controls are still not playing back smoothly. They are stuttering: Visually and through the controller playback which in turn makes faders jump like crazy.
This issue started in 8.5 and got slightly worse in 9. Works fine in 8 (Which is why we’re still in 8 over here) All our controllers are motorized.

This sounds more like there’s some problem with your Generic Remote settings. I’ve only seen such strange jumping when my GR settings were not correct. Just a guess.
Even with ports set to none you can see the Inspector > Quick Control faders stuttering!
What about the Generic Remote? Have you checked that? The inspector can’t use what Cubase doesn’t know. You have to use the Learn Function in Generic Remote and perhaps adjust some other settings on your controller.

I read it. I’m not missing the point. I think your GR or whatever hardware you’re working with is not correctly set-up, perhaps both. Good luck. Automation works fine here, no stuttering, no jumping around – whatever that means.
Put some information in your signature regarding your system. Write to Cubase tech support or hope someone else answers your post. Take care.
It’s not hardware dependent or a setup issue unfortunately. Cubase 8 and 9 just send out less automation data back to the generic controller. That’s why motorized faders stutter:
