Reading a project file

Hi all, on opening an old project file, I recognized that it uses an old 32 bit vst midi synth, that is not supported anymore. I also have the newer x64 version installed. I wonder if there is any chance to read the set of parameters of the old synth from the project file, to rebuild it in the new version. The project file itself seems to be binary or so, basically not readable. Any ideas are appriciated. Thanks.

That would seem cumbersome. I simply continue using all my fav early-century vst and vst2 plugs via jbridge. Flawless on Win11.

The term “not supported” is greatly exaggerated nowadays unless spoken by Apple

If you can launch the old synth and save its configuration as a preset can the new version load that?

hi all and thanks for your thoughts. I scanned the project file with a hex editor and at least found a hint to the initial preset the sound was based on. Herewith I managed to rebuild the sound in the newer version of the synth. since my last fresh installation and since x86 vsts don’t work nativley, I try to only use x64 vsts. Works fine - eventhough I I miss a few darlings. Stabilty in general is very great this way. Long way short: I found a solution in this specific case, but a “project text reader” App would be a great helper (hallo @Steinberg). Have a good night.

It’s not very realistic to ask Steinberg to build a tool to support old deprecated technology …
One tip I would give to anyone who is serious about their productions and works on the long term, is to literally export presets for each synth used in a song and save all this withing the project folder structure. Tedious but useful in case something resets or gets lost. Now if there was something to automate that it would be helpful !

Thanks for the advise. Normally I also freeze or render in place any not analog track besides saving the preset. However in this case it seems, I forgot to render and also the preset I saved with the x86 version of the synth wasn’t compatible to import with the x64 instrument. I also believe Steinberg will not do anything here, and it is understandable, but being able to read an old project file in clear text would be awsome. Just dreaming…

You are right, that there are ways. However a few years ago I decided for myself to perform a hard cut to only use x64 versions. If you start looking, there are always great alternatives available. In this case the project was a few years old, and with a currently fresh system install, there are no old plugins left. Basically it was no hard deal to replace that few. Here I was “just” missing, how the instrument was setup…

unfortunetly not
