I am using the real time recording option in dorico. Is there a way to hear the audio from the computer through my headphones that are plugged into my midi keyboard. I am trying to hear the metronome click while recording. I also would like to hear the playback through the headphones as well. Is there a way to do this?
Welcome, Jamie.
To do this, there would need to be a “route” for audio signals out of your computer, into your keyboard, and out of the keyboard’s headphone jack. I don’t know what make and model your keyboard is, but I’m not convinced that many keyboards have an audio “through”.
Normally, audio output on digital keyboards is limited to the sounds that they generate themselves.
But you can set Dorico to send MIDI to external MIDI keyboards, so that the keyboards can then render audio using their on-board samples, and send that audio out of the jack.
However, I think you would be best served by plugging the headphone into your computer, and using the keyboard as a “dumb” MIDI device, whose MIDI input your software renders to audio.
Ben, thanks for your response. To clarify, I’m using a Yamaha P series keyboard with MIDI capabilities. When I connect my headphones to the computer while the MIDI keyboard is connected, the sound still plays through the keyboard’s built-in speakers.
The problem is that you have two devices generating separate audio – the keyboard is generating its own piano noises, and your computer is generating sounds, too.
Of course, your computer can generate piano sounds, as well as any other instruments you need, plus the click for the beat; whereas your Yamaha can only play one sound at a time.
If you want to use headphones, then you need one source of audio. So if the Yamaha is making sounds, on top of the piano noises that Dorico is generating, then you may need to turn down the volume on the keyboard!
Thank you Ben, it works with turning down the keyboard volume I think I was messing with the midi thru toggle for another thing. I think I forgot to toggle that back. Is there a way to have the midi keyboard sound playing while inputting notes for different instruments and in real time input but then when I play back the instruments, they will play back the instrument sound assigned.
When you say “audio from the computer” – if you’re only interested in auditioning your music, and are not concerned with audio from other apps or concerned about by what virtual instruments library your music is being played back, you might want to consider using your Yamaha keyboard as a MIDI output device. Here is more info about how to set that up.
When you play notes on your MIDI keyboard, then by default, Dorico should make “instrument noises” as a result. So, if a trumpet staff is selected, then you get trumpet sounds when you Play your MIDI keyboard. (And obviously when you press Play on the score.)
Is that not happening?
The only configuration should be to make sure your keyboard is check in Dorico’s Preferences, as a MIDI Input device.
