Reconform procedure

Hi can somebody explain to me an easy way (if there is one) to reconform a project. If you have a lot of audio tracks, it’s a bit scary trying to move them across etc. I know there is a reconform tool in Nuendo, but it’s only really useful if you have an edl. Thanks everyone.

Are you asking about reconforming to a new cut without an EDL, doing it manually not using the reconform tool?

the best way, in my opinion, is using folder with every track you want to ReConfirm in it. The issue that i faced a lot of times when i started with Nuendo is, that automation on tracks under folder and automation on groups and effects under folder doesn’t move in the same way.

If you have Automation follows events enabled and move with the event displayed on the folder itself, all the automation under audio (and MIDI) tracks will move as expected, but on groups and effect tracks will not. Why is that? At first glance it’s not intuitive, but it’s logical. The displayed event is linking only other audio or MIDI “events” under the folder and nothing else.

The way how to properly edit timeline even with automation under folder is not through selection tool but through range tool. Using commands like “cut range”, “paste” and “cut time” you can re-edit your timeline quite effectively.

I was using this technique when the editor could provide only a new video with a new reference audio track. I put my previous master wav file into an audio track under this “master” folder so i could have a reference and than compared the waveforms.

Also there is another much faster way using the ReConform tool, even without proper video EDLs to compare. Did the editor use your previous exported version of the project? And if so, was it a BWAV file?

This is great information. Thank you so much. Yes I use folder tracks, but on this occasion my FX tracks and Music tracks are all being automated via VCA tracks. And that’s when I noticed the automation not responding correctly. I will do some further investigation. And I will also have a look again at using the range selection tool. Thanks again :+1:

You could ask the editor for an EDL just from the track containing your re-edited export. That could effectively give you the Re-Conform EDL already. You can load that into the Re-cut slot (an the low position) of the ReConform tool, possibly edit it there if needed (right click will give your valuable options), and voila, everything is ReConformed.

If you are looking at only a few edits, then it is easily done “by hand”. (using the Range Tool)
If there are a gazillion edits, then you have no other option than to use “Matchbox”.
It’s a complicated tool, but it gets the job done.

As mentioned above and on Facebook. Using the range selection tool is really useful. All of the tracks and automation on the VCAs moves perfectly. And using folder tracks and the range selection tool does make this really easy. Using the object selection tool and folders, leaves the automation behind. So the range selection tool and folders is the solution with no edl. Now I will try the edl method, but using my original wav file, compared to a new one :+1:

I agree with everyone else of course.

One thing I’ll add is that if you don’t have an EDL and you suspect that there may be changes that aren’t obvious then if the video editor provided a temporary audio mixdown from both the old sequence and the new one then often everything they didn’t touch (old content, just maybe moved) will mix down the same way on their end. You can then line up the two cuts and pan one left and the other right and then when monitoring you’ll have everything dead-center until the cuts differ. I do this on many jobs; just start from the top and listen to that until things go out of sync.

Additionally, if you cut the old sequence audio mixdown along with your reconform you should be able to pan them the same and flip the phase on one. Route to a common output and do a quick mixdown and if you see any signal at any location you’ll have to triple-check that location.
