From NUENDO12 to the latest version, simply pressing the Arm button on and off for the Audio Track advances the numbers in the file name that is created.
This differs from the numbers used when actually recording, causing misunderstandings with clients and making it very difficult to use in professional studios.
Is anyone here having trouble with this?
Agreed, this behaviour seems rather odd and it’s difficult to understand why it has been implemented like this.
How would you ideally want automatic file naming / numbering to work? Are you referring purely to the file name of the audio file that is created or the description for the event?
That is because Nuendo has a pre-record function.
It records audio as soon as you arm the track.
This is actualy a feature, not a bug.
See manual.

@Fredo However, presumably arming the track means the pre-record data is stored in a temporary buffer and has not yet been stored as a named file since no event has actually been recorded. The question remains, why should the numerical appendix counter of the filename be increased each time the track is armed or re-armed (even when you don’t go ahead and make a recording on the track)?
This is particularly relevant if you have activated Preferences>Editing>Project & MixConsole>Enable Record on Selected Audio Track. To some users it may come as a surprise that the filename defaults to ‘bass_12’, for example, instead of ‘bass_01’ the first time they record on the bass track, dependent on how many times they have selected the bass track beforehand during routine navigation within the project.
TBH, the behaviour doesn’t trouble me personally, but I do still wonder why the filename numbering appendix has been implemented in this manner.
