Record from Mac into Cubase Elements 14 tracks

I use Cubase Elements 14 on my iMac running Sequoia 15.7.2. I have 2 microphones and run those into a FocusRite scarlett 2i2 audio interface to record the vibraphone - that works just fine and I have that down!

I only use Cubase for myself to practice vibraphone with. I cannot figure out how to record existing music from Audacity, QuickTime, Apple Music, iReal Pro, Spotify, etc. onto a track in Cubase so I can record myself practicing with it. I have seen a post or two that suggests that this can be done but I haven’t been able to put it all together.

When I go to Project | Add Track I see the options for: Audio, Instrument, Sampler, and Midi. I gone through each of those options and do not see the option to choose, for example, Audacity.

If I go to Audio Connections | Inputs the only Audio Device that shows up there is the Scarlett 2i2.

If I go to Studio Setup | Devices | Audio System there is only the Scarlett 2i2.

Can someone explain how this is done? Thanks in advance,
Jerry

Using your Scarlett 2i2’s Loopback feature

Loopback allows software audio out (like Audacity) to be routed to software audio in (like Cubase).

Checking my Scarlett 2i2 it appears that I have the 2i2 Studio 3rd Gen version. I wasn’t certain before which model I have. I opened the FocusRite Control application and it doesn’t detect my 2i2 - it just gives a “Hardware Not Detected” error. The 2i2 does show up in the Mac’s System Report under USB category.

So I downloaded the newer version of the FocusRite Control v. 3.26.0248 and it doesn’t look anything like the description on the linked page.

I understand the directions there but don’t think that my FocusRite supports the loopback capability. I’m going to contact them to find out about this.

Thanks for your advice. It gives me a direction.

Gen 3 loopback instructions are here but 2i2 is not mentioned so looks like it doesn’t do it. I believe it’s possible with a third party software routing app…if you do a search for record mac audio into DAW you should find some recommendations.
