Record stereo audio track from internal audio without any interface attached

I want to record a stereo audio track from my laptop’s internal audio without having to plug in my audio interface. For example to record a Zoom meeting or something like that. When I create a stereo audio track, the only inputs showing up are the internal microphone. I have done this with Audacity on another computer, so I figured it should be possible with Cubase. There should be a way to do this without any additional hardware or software I think, since other (free) software does this easily. I don’t really want to install Audacity on this particular computer as I have it on another laptop (Win 7) already.

On a Windows PC Cubase uses a different audio system than Windows itself.
In order to get the audio from Windows over to Cubase your internal audio interface needs to have some sort of loopback function. For my laptop’s Realtek audio chip e.g. this port is called
grafik

In Cubase you need to chose the Steinberg built-in ASIO driver. Then open its Control Panel and select the Stereomix (or whatever the name is on your computer) as the input device.

Afterwards create an appropriate input bus, I guess you know how to do that.

Thanks much for you help.

On my computer I don’t see this “Stereomix” only the Realtech Microphone. So I held up my phone to the microphone on the laptop and recorded what I needed that way. Kinda cheesy but got the job done.

For next time, explore the various “virtual audio cables” apps for windows. Instant routing of anything to anything.

If your built-in audio interface does not have that kind of feature you should indeed look at free software that gives you a virtual audio interface.
I have this one installed:
