Recording dialog (add to active track of montage) doesn't work anymore

WL v12.0.40

Re: recording window option
According to the manual…

**** If Add to Active Track of Montage is selected, the audio is recorded in an existing audio montage at the edit cursor position. If no audio montage exists, a new one is created.***

This feature does not work like it did in previous versions. Now, When selected with an open montage, the recorded audio opens into a separate audio window instead of to the selected montage track.

Is there a reason for this change or is this a bug? This was the only way to record into a montage track and monitor my input levels from within WL (a very useful feature).

On a related note - are there plans to implement input metering via the montage track meters? That would help streamline the montage recording process.

This is a bug indeed. I am not sure there is enough time to fix that for upcoming 12.0.50.

You are right, this is missing. There is a plan for this, but this is not scheduled yet.

This is all great news !!

Thanks as always PG.

I forgot that this is already possible :slightly_smiling_face:
Activate track monitoring and have “Direct Monitor” OFF. And it just works.
What you actually see in the meters, then, is the montage output (Master Section output, actually), which also contains the monitored input signal.

Hi PG,

This bug still seems to be present in 12.0.51

Any thoughts on when it can be corrected?

thanks

You mean the bug about '“Add to Active Track of Montage” ?
This feature was developed when it was not possible to record on an audio montage track. The resolution has a low priority as it is now possible to record directly on a montage track.

That’s unfortunate to hear, as the feature was very conducive to our production workflow for live VO/tracking & overdubbing for years. The ability to quickly name/rename tracks for recording takes (and imbedding named markers while recording to a montage track) keeps file management extremely easy. (think audiobook recording, radio, and overdub rooms). Plus, not having to switch monitoring status after each take is also a time saver. With WL being a swiss army knife app with multiple ways of achieving our objectives, I think removing a feature like this is disappointing. I think it has value in addition to the new montage recording option. I’m not one to complain because I LOVE WL and we use it 8 hours a day exclusively, but I hope this feature comes back sooner than later. It’s a good option to have IMHO. Fingers crossed. :slightly_frowning_face:

Yes, while I mostly record directly on a track now, the record window is still useful when you also want to drop markers and BWF metadata while recording.

Would be useful if this worked as before. The buttons are still there, after all :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Hi!
You can drop markers in record mode in Montage
but I’m not sure about BWF metadata…

True. But, in the new method the markers dropped are no longer associated with the audio file being recorded, but rather the timeline. You can bind them to the clip, but they aren’t saved with the recorded audio file. AND - you lose the ability to name the markers on the fly (handy for VO takes).

Correct and I agree could be a killer

Polite correction: WAS killer!

We had always had this. It’s great for real time QC marking during transfers. Dropping markers when noises are heard saves tons of time when switching to audio file restoration (where the markers travel with the wav).

The option still remains in the record dialog so why would we not expect it to work like it has for decades? It’s been a brilliant, useful function and is an integral part of my work flow. Plus embedding important bwf metada on the way in with record window is great. Why have to add it after the fact? Inefficient and unnecessary file rewriting. Admittedly just a mild step backwards, but why leave it behind. option is still offered in the dialog

This is a good point about markers—you’re right. I’ll raise the priority of the fix in my to-do list.

However, note that you can still record and drop markers; that part works ! The only thing that doesn’t work is the automatic addition of the audio file to the audio montage track. This can easily be done manually.

:key: And in case you weren’t aware, when a montage is the active window, you can still open the record dialog by clicking the record button on the transport bar while holding the Alt key :slightly_smiling_face:

True. Although some features like Record at cursor (recording without active display on montage and adding recorded file to cursor on stop) was still possible. Since when was recording to Montage as in V12.5 introduced?

Unless you are planning to swap the recorded audio with markers on stop button with the audio file on montage/not display recording in montage when “add to montage” is selected

These would be challenging.

  1. Marker written to audio file while recording is displayed on Montage.
  2. Rulers also having option to work like before, for every clip. / Activate rulers and marker for recorded clip by default.

Have you checked if this is latency free?

The record window can also be used as a meter this way.
