That’s right. I wish there was a way in cubase to cycle record (loop record) and each take would be a separate audio file. Normally I don’t use lanes for different takes: I record each take on a separate track. But there are times when it’s convenient to use loop record, too.
Yeah, I could see how creating new audio files for the “Takes” could make the Cubase project size, project audio folder and the audio pool a little more chaotic to manage. But it would be nice to have a option to create new audio files for cycled / looped recordings.
Normally for me it’s been Cubase for midi based projects, and protools for audio. But I’d rather stick with one program for both. Another thing: Dorico. I use Sibelius for notation, but I’ve been demoing Dorico 6 and I really like it! And now Cubase has some Dorico functionality. This combo is super attractive. So I hope Steinberg cleans up audio implementation so that one wouldn’t need to jump programs for different aspects of music making.
Maybe consider creating a new thread with a feature request tag. This one was kind of a discovery, discussion, borderline issue. I think that having a preference to create new audio files on cycled recordings so that the Musical Mode time stretch to tempo functionality works correctly is fair enough. There could be various other situations and reasons where this could be beneficial also. But unfortunately there’s no guarantee that this would ever be implemented by Steinberg.
You’re just going to have to stick to using your work around methods for the time being (could be decades) ![]()
I don’t think I’ll create a new thread. It would be a waste of time. This thread is enough. Don’t the developers follow these discussions? If they don’t, that’s their problem, not mine. There are several things that Cubase needs to improve with audio functionality and implementation…
It’s mainly so that the forum can be filtered categorically. The “Issue” and “Feature Request” tags are most related to development and have the highest chance of being seen by Steinberg or by someone who has a line of communication with them.
I think you can do this if the section you are looping is larger than what you are recording. For example if you wanted to record a bunch of Takes for bars 8-16.
- Set your Punch points so they can be placed independently from the Loop points
- Put Punch-In at bar 8 and Punch-Out at bar 17
- Put the Loop Locators Start at bar 7 and its End at bar 18
- Now each Punch In/Out should create a new Audio file
For a fixed Tempo this even sets the Tempo correctly. I assume Set Definition From Tempo would be needed for a varying Tempo.
You’re right! It does create independent audio files! And I think therefore it should align with tempo and work with musical mode (and save me time from resetting this whole project to protools). Let me check some more…be right back.
How on earth did you think of that??? It works! Still testing, but I think you solved it!
So still testing, and I did to “write definition to audio file” to make the behavior function in the larger scheme of things. What I mean is that if you don’t do that and you change the tempo outside of the punch zone, it gets messy. But it seems to work with write definitions…
So in my test file, it worked! Many thanks! Tomorrow I’ll check it out in a real recording situation with musicians!
Interesting method to get Cubase to create separate audio files for cycled recordings ![]()
So it works, and it’s far better. It still, oddly enough, pushes audio over by a few milliseconds for some reason, even when when I set definitions. But it’s a step in the right direction!
