Recording MIDI without playing existing recording

I want to record MIDI while making new events. The problem is that if I already have something recorded it plays back while I’m recording a new part, which I don’t want.

It seems like MIDI Record Mode = New Parts and MIDI Cycle Record Mode = Stacked should work, but it doesn’t, and I can’t figure the correct way to set it up.

Is my only option to mute the track while I’m recording?

It seems to me the option applies in a cycle mode; I use a turnaround, I duplicate the track an delete the edited content of the copy
