Remote music composition collaboration option between different DAWs

Hey guys,

what is the best collaboration option between different DAWs, for example between Nuendo and Logic Pro X? My colleague (Logic Pro X user) has trouble with the MIDI files I sent her. When I import my own exported MIDI file and import it in a new fresh project, it imports every MIDI track / instrument. When my colleague imports the MIDI file she can’t see all the tracks that are included in this file.

Of course, if you don’t have the same VST plugins that there are differences that’s clear. But why it doesn’t show all the MIDI tracks? I exportet it as MIDI type 0 so it should be working.

We’ve found out that MIDI doesn’t seems to be the best way for that. But what is the better or what is the best way for remote music composition collaborations?

Hi,

Disable the SMF0 export, to export it as SMF1, please. If you are talking just about MIDI, you can also try the *.MusicXML file type or the *.dawproject file type.

Hi Martin, Thank you, but the problem is, we are looking for a solution to cooperation between Nuendo and other DAWs. As I said, my colleague is using Logic Pro X and obviously Logic Pro X just can import MIDI files but not any of the other files Nuendo can export as.

The “standard” was to cooperate between DAWs is Wav audio files, and both DAWs set to the same sample rate and bit rate and SMPTE Time Code along with tempo.

You agree on the tempo and start of the project, so that each DAW starts say a 1:00:00:00 SMPTE and that is Bar 1:1:1:1

Set the tempo the same on both DAWs.

Then always start any audio 2 bars into the timeline, so you can then export all tracks as audio INCLUDING the 2 bar empty space before hand. You can add a 1/4 note click to the top if you like. Once you figure this out is becomes easy to send and receive audio files between any number of DAWs.

As to MIDI, again, export them as “multi track” option, or even one at a time, remembering to name them well.

Importing MIDI should be simple enough. It seems your friend is importing a multi track MIDI into a single track. Making individual MIDI files per instrument is always better than taking a chance.

Hope this helps you out.

Hi,

There is no other MIDI file. All of them follow the MIDI specification.

Since version 14, there is the *.dawproject file format support, which you can import/export to/from Cubase and Nuendo. Have you tried it?

Are you asking about remote collaboration, i.e., via the Internet?

I don’t have 14 yet. We had no time to try 13, yet. It’s installed since “decades” but it wasn’t possible to go to 13, yet.

No, I’m asking how my colleague can see all the things I composed and exported in a MIDI file. She is using Logic Pro X. As I said: From 48 tracks as it should be she can see just 29 of it. And I exported the project as MIDI type 0.

Hi,

In another thread, I asked you to try SMF1.

Are you also using 48 different MIDI Ports/Channels? Or do some tracks share the same MIDI Port and Channel?

I don’t change anything regarding MIDI channels or something. I add new instruments and am using them. I don’t know much about MIDI ports / channels because usually I don’t need these skills in my daily work. On the left hand side I can see ‘MIDI channel 0 program 0’. And above, under the MIDI port option, I can see ‘1’ (Kanal (English: channel). When I click on ‘Kanal’ I can see “Alle (all)” and numbers from 1 to 16. And on every instrument it is always on (channel) ‘1’ and ‘MIDI channel 0 program 0’. But I don’t know what that means, actually. The one shows MIDI (Kanal (channel)) 1 and the other says ‘MIDI channel 0 program 0’.

Hi,

MIDI Channel 0 is very unusual. Could you provide a screenshot, please?

Could you attach the Cubase project (CPR), please? Remove all MIDI Parts, keep just the empty tracks in the shared project, please.

Hi Martin,

Thank you. Unfortunately, I can’t upload the npr-project-file. It’s almost 50 MB.

Hi,

Do you have NI Kontakt in the MIDI Device Manager?

Why do you use the Program Selector?

Do you have NI Kontakt in the MIDI Device Manager?

I don’t know. I didn’t change anything. I’m using NI Kontakt, yes.

Why do you use the Program Selector?

I don’t what the ‘Program Selector’ is. What ‘Program’? I’ve made this screenshot because you asked me to provide a screenshot from this part of the screen (MIDI). Or what do you meant by ‘MIDI Channel 0 is very unusual. Could you provide a screenshot, please?’, 8 days ago?

Thank you, but the transmission path is not the problem.
