I recently bought the Cubase 12 update for Cubase 11 Pro. Since Cubase 11 Pro does not support the new Steinberg Licensing Format, it is stored on a eLicenser USB Dongle. When I updated the existing Cubase 11 Pro Version using the Update Key in the eLicenser Control Software, Cubase 12 is still showed up on the eLicenser USB Dongle and there is a notification in brackets, that Cubase 12 was updated from Cubase 11. Is there a way to remove the updated Cubase 12 Version from the USB Dongle since with the new Steinberg Licensing there is no need for a pyhsical Dongle anymore.
Looking forward for your support and thank you in advance, Chris
Hi,
What you see on the eLicenser is just the upgraded Cubase 11 license, which is still valid and working. It is marked as being upgraded, so that you can’t do it again.
The new Cubase 12 license is maintained by the new Activation Manager, there you will see the new license.
Is it possible to remove the license from the eLicencer, so that i can resell the USB Dongle, but keep the Cubase 12 license?
It would be great if the Cubase 12 License would be stored on the new Steinberg Activation Manager independently.
Steinberg Licensing is not backwards compatible. However, we wanted to preserve the option to use older product versions for compatibility reasons, as this has been a feature of the old eLicenser license management. Now, you can run for instance a Dorico 3.5 license using the eLicenser and a Dorico 4 license using Steinberg Licensing.
Can I upgrade or update the “Upgraded to…” license on my eLicenser?
No, that is not possible. The license became a final eLicenser license that cannot be altered in any way. The only purpose of the old “Upgraded to…” license is to allow backwards compatibility.
Can I sell the “Upgraded to…” license?
This is not allowed as with any other license update/upgrade, the initial license is still part of your entitlement to use the latest software version - this time with the benefit of having two licenses split across two license management systems.
If there are any other licenses in this USB-eLicenser that you wish to sell, then you should purchase another USB-eLicenser dongle and move those licenses to it.
That’s how it does work now - the license on the dongle has zero control over Cubase 12. If you unplug the dongle Cubase 12 will run exactly like it does with the dongle plugged in. The Cubase 11 (not 12) license on the dongle is there so you can continue to run all the earlier versions of Cubase up through Cubase 11. If you are certain you’ll never want to run Cubase 11, for example to access an older plug-in, then feel free to blow away the dongle license. But I don’t think you can undo that decision if you later find you really need to run Cubase 8 for some reason.
I’d imagine the market for old and now obsolete dongles is small and rapidly shrinking.
