Repeat in mid measure - how to?

Hi,
I’m tranposing a bach choral for service
How to recreate this layout?
2 imminent problems

  1. only fermata on top and bottom note
  2. repeat at end of second sys after beat 3 (I could make a 3/4bar and 1/4 bar but there might be other options)?

Hi,

  1. Select this option in Engraving Options:

If the bottom staff’s fermata is above the staff and you want it to be below, select it in Engrave Mode and press F.

  2. Select a note on the 4th beat, invoke Bar popover (Shift+B), type :| then Enter.

Also: in your pdf, barlines are not joined between staves, to avoid collisions with lyrics. Since your instrument is a piano, you can achieve this by going to Library > Instruments > Piano. There, check Vocal staff. The barlines will then be unjoined.

I usually prefer to enter barlines during note input in such cases, like this:

EDIT: Instead of invoking and using the bars and barline popover, you can also just click the desired barline in the right panel.

You’re welcome! :slightly_smiling_face:

For future reference, as this is something that you might run into when engraving hymns and chorales:

In the case you have a non-repeated section and the following section is to be repeated with an upbeat, you will need to enter a repeat start mid-measure this way, which then can be assigned a system break in Engrave mode. However, in such cases Dorico by default sets a single bar line at the end of the previous system, like this:

To have an open end, you need to select the repeat start and look for the option Barline at end of system in the bottom panel, which can be done in both Write and Engrave modes:

Set this to None

…and the result looks right:

There is also a global option for this in the settings to adjust the default behaviour, but what I wanted to point out is this: Dorico always handles barlines as single objects, so you won’t be able to just select the barline at the end of the system and hide it or set it to “invisible” (as it was common in Sibelius), but that barline is an integral property of the barline that starts the following system and thus has to be adjusted in the latter’s properties.

One last thing: Even if there are no repeats or any other additional barlines, you can set system breaks mid-measure, but this has to be enabled in Layout options:

With all this, you should now be prepared for any occasions in which lyric line ends and barlines do not match and the former are to determine the distribution of system breaks.

No problem! I ran into such specific cases myself and had to look for those functions, so I thought I might share this.
