Hello. Quick question for you all. I have a song, two repeated sections back to back. The first time i’d like it to not do the repeats, and the second time i’d like repeats. In my music, for the musicians, i have a senza repetizione first time, so they know .. but my playback in Dorico i can’t get to do this. Is there a way ? Thx!
Here is a structure that gives the desired playback sequence without repeat barlines:
I added a Segno at the start of bar 3. After adding a D.S. at the end of bar 2, I added a D.C. at a different rhythmic position and moved it to the end of bar 2. After adding a D.C. at the end of bar 4, I added a D.S. at a different rhythmic position and moved it to the end of bar 4.
Since the verse numbers indicate the sequence in which the repeated sections should be played, the repeat markers can all be hidden.

I basically have an 8 bar repeated section followed by another 8 bar repeated section and a DS to lead back to an 8 bar intro (before these repeated sections) and then play through as written. On the first pass I’d like the two 8 bar repeated sections to not be repeated, but in the DS they should be repeated.
If you want to enclose the repeated sections in repeat barlines but not play the repeats until after the D.S. jump, then you need to skip over the end/start repeat barline between the repeated sections and execute the D.S. jump before encountering the end repeat barline:
For this example, I have reduced the 8-bar intro and each 8-bar repeated section to 2 bars in 2/4 time. I also assume that there must be some music before the intro or you could have used a D.C. jump rather than a D.S. jump and a Segno.
To avoid encountering the end repeat barline on the first pass, the D.S. is anchored the duration of a 1024th note before that barline. In the last bar with force duration turned on, I entered a triple-dotted quarter note followed by a quadruple-dotted 64th note followed by a 1024th note, selected the last note and added the D.S. marker:
Then I selected all of the notes in the last bar, tied them and turned force duration off to obtain a half note.
To skip over the end/start repeat barline, a hidden D.S. with marker index 2 is anchored the duration of a 1024th note before that barline, and a hidden Segno with marker index 2 is anchored at the start of the second repeated section.
Finally, in Library > Playback Options > Repeats, the option Play repeats after D.S./D.C. jump should be activated.
Everytime i try doing this, my Dorico crashes … i’m not sure why Dorico doesn’t have a feature that does a “senza rip.” … it really should.

This is so frustrating. Crashes every time i try. I created a diagnostic report and tried to attach it here but it says the zip file is too large. Hoenstly. Why can’t things just work ?!
It is so ridiculous to me that you have to do this run around way of getting your playback to work when you should be able to input ‘senza rip.’, or an easy click box that says ‘do not repeat on first pass’ … that was possible in Sibelius which i used prior to purchasing this. Ridiculous.
I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble implementing the workaround for senza ripetizione. If you are willing to send me your project in a direct message, I would try to implement the workaround for you. Click on my avatar and then click on the blue Message button to send me a direct message. If your project is too large, try applying the Silence playback template to make it smaller.

Just to let everyone know, I’ve spent almost two hours trying to implement the workaround for senza ripetizione without success. The project keeps crashing for me as well.
It would be nice if the repeat barlines would be ignored on the first pass if they were selected, the property Suppress playback was set to On Passes and the property Suppress on passes was set to 1. Currently, the repeat barlines ignore these properties.
Thanks for your time John, i appreciate it! Yes, we need a fix from Steinberg for this. I use this all the time in my arrangements. Repeated sections that i need to have ‘senza rip.’ the first pass, and then to repeat them the second pass. No simple way of doing this instead of literally writing ALL that music notation out which is ridiculous.
Although I still don’t know why the project which @cet.b shared with me causes Dorico to crash while trying to implement the senza ripetizione workaround, I was able to re-create the troublesome flow from scratch and successfully implement the workaround.
Here’s another issue i have. I have a flow with the following structure … INTRO, section 1, section 2, section 3 (with 1st and 2nd ending), Dal Segno back to section 1 …
I engage the ‘play repeats after DS jump’, all of that … and it works UNTIL it hits a section with the first and second ending .. then it skips the repeat and goes immediately to the 2nd ending. Drives me crazy!
To get the first ending and the repeat in the following example to be played after the D.S. jump…
…select the first ending bracket in engrave mode and set the following properties:
- No. times played to 3
- Times played for segment to 1,3
- Custom text to 1.
Now the first ending and the repeat will be played after the D.S. jump even if the playback option Play repeats after D.S./D.C. jump is not checked.
