Reverb Linking for Stem Separation

Hi, got a workflow question for Stem Separation using reverbs.
In my fiction mix project template I have set up 2 Mono and 2 5.0 Reverb FX Tracks per Stem. I automate either the A set of reverbs or the B set of reverbs for a particular scene, overlapping A and B in transitions. Depending on the project it can go as far as having 5 - 6 different Stems all with different Reverbs (DX, FX, MX, Foley, Backgrounds, Narration…)
How do you guys go about parameter setting for all the different Stems? I usually copy the parameters of the one DX Verb and paste it to all the others while in preview and punch over the scene.

I tried Link-Groups, but unfortunately selecting presets does not sync over to other tracks. Tried with Stratus and Cinematic Rooms.

Does anyone have a good workflow for that?

Not sure if I understand the question. Can you expand on the problem?

sure:

Set scenario:

  • In my session I have 5 reverb channels.
  • The parameters of these reverbs should all be the same.
  • I want to automate the parameters of one of these reverbs using presets over a specific time/loop.
  • This Parameter change should also happen on the other 4 reverbs.

Right now I stay in Preview Mode, copy the “master” plugins parameters, which I tweaked and paste them to all 4 other reverbs. The Master Reverb is usually the Dialog-Reverb. I’d like to find a better/faster workflow for doing this. Link-Channels does not do what I want in this scenario unfortunately.

I’ve just copy-pasted like you have. I agree, if there was a faster way that would be good.

That’s the way I would do it too . Have you clicked on the E button beside Links to see if you have the appropriate parameters checked?

Yes, “Inserts” is checked.

All Workflows of how fellow re-recording mixers do it are very welcome

I create 8 different (most used for that project) reverbs per STEM.
8 x small room for DX
8 x small room for DXOpt
8 x small room for PFX
8 x small room for FX
8 x small room for Foley Steps
8 x small room for Foley Props
etc …

8 x Ouside Slap for DX
8x Outside Slap for DXOpt
etc …

Usually, I use the 7th and 8th one for variables (Specific spaces).
I write automation for that.

I first premix (add reverbs) to DX.
Then I do the same for the PFX. Very probably, I will extend the reverb time a bit more than for DX, which relies more on early reflections.
Then the same for FX, Foley, etc …

You simply can’t link thoese (unless you are doing a Quick&Dirty mix) because each foodgroup requires different amounts of reverb and mostly a slightly modified reverb.
So if you want to get it right, you have to put in the work.

I think the gist of the post and question was how you apply the same settings across food groups, at least as a starting point. So if you want to modify for example your small room for DX how would you have copied over those settings to your PFX reverb for that same scene, even if you then modify it?

I assume you do the same as us - place in preview, copy/paste, punch to fill loop/scene?

Yeah sure, all foodgroups need slightly different settings, but the basis is the same. Your (Fredo) basis are the default settings of the verb channels, my defaults are presets in Stratus I want to automate back and forth with.

In my original post I was saying, that I like to use 2 reverbs/scene/foodgroup. One Mono Verb for adjusting Lavs, ADR, Foley to the boom and a 5.0 Verb for “room creation” if need be. So, for me atleast, there are not enough sends for so many different default rooms. I also use Sends for other stuff as reverb. I also feed an LFE FX from the sends, feed a delay and propably the Atmos Renderer if it happens to be an object.

So yeah… I’d like to limit my reverb sends to 5. 2x mono, 2x 5.0, 1x 4.0/5.0 “special” Verb (Flashback, Dreamy stuff). Thats why I have to copy my scene default before starting the scene. Kinda tedious, but not THAT bad either.
Just wanted to see if there is a smarter way. Surely considering yours and what it can offer me.

When it comes to workflow its always good to know 5 diffent ways to do stuff… When you know those 5, maybe you can tailor a 6th that suits your needs the best. Thats how I learned mixing… watched lots of people do it so I can pick the best things from every one of them for myself.

precisely

After creating my first reverb settings for DX, I create a preset and just load them into the other reverbs.

That never happens, because I apply reverb to my Foodgroups one by one.
First all of the DX, then all of the PFS, and so on.
Which mean I modify each reverb for each Foodgroup.
I never link my reverbs.
When I need to go fast, then I fader ride/Write the reverb sends.
Nuage is great for that with the flip-fader function, I control the reverb sends with my faders.

Let me answer that again to make it more clear.
I never use the exact same reverb settings for DX, PFX, etc …
Dialog requires less reverb time, and more early reflections, while -for example footsteps- need more reverb time. And most of the time a longer reverb time than the Dialog.
Call me old fashioned, but I doubt that linking reverbs (having them identical on each foodgroup) works well.

But … I have linked reverbs in the past for other reasons, and as far as I remember, the linking feature works well for that.
