Anything besides what you would experience in a “natural” setting (like a live concert) would be regarded a “special”
To me special implies something different than you and I’m sure many others also wouldn’t regard mixing a plate reverb on vox and a room on drums as anything special.
I don’t regard “natural” as being the baseline outside of which anything else is special as I think modern multitrack production is inherently anything but natural. (Not that you can’t achieve a natural sounding result!)
I’m sure there is no great gap in our thinking here…just in the definitions we’re placing on things.
Hey Bob, I am having the same situation where I have 1 Kontakt and 3 MIDI lanes inside it. On the 3rd MIDI lane I want to have an outside reverb. I tried to understand what clarified it for you, but I am not grasping the concept. Is there a way you can possibly help me out?
The bit I am stuck on (Cubase 14) is how to direct my MIDI Piano part to the FX track I created. In the Routing section of the MIDI track it has Output Routing = HALion Sonic and Instrument Return Channel as HSSE Main (which I have no idea what that means). I understand conceptually that I have to send MIDI to an FX track to use Reverb, etc, but how to do it is killing me.
It’s more probably ‘Halion Sonic 01 - HS Main’ : this indicates that the audio return will come from the first (main) stereo output of Halion Sonic (which has 16 of them).
It’s not from the MIDI track itself that you should set a send to your FX track, but on the track which is used as the instrument return one, as it’s the only one able to process audio signals. Beside this, attempting (even if it was possible) to route MIDI events to an FX track which deals with audio incoming signals would be useless.
Whether an Instrument track or rack, you have at disposal a Send section in the ‘Channel’ panel of the MIDI track inspector (if not visible, either use the related strip in the MixConsole or tick the Channel option in the Set Up Window Layout menu, on the top right of the arrange page) : it’s in it that you should set your send to the FX track.
