I just moved to Dorico from Finale. I’m using Dorico v5.1 but this version still does not offer the option to print directly to 9.5x12.5 paper in the print option. I have custom cut paper and several HP printers and have printed thousands of pages directly in Finale. What am I missing? Printing from a pdf is an extra step.
My understanding of this is that Dorico is not responsible for the accessible sizes in the list, it’s something you need to deal with your printer driver. Feel free to prove me wrong if needed.
Indeed, provided your printer reports to Dorico that it supports 9.5"×12.5" paper, it will show up as expected.
Thanks Marc & ds. I just made a quick print on an HP 5100. It may be because it’s an older printer but 9.5x12.5 does not show up on the Dorico list but does show up on the “system dialogs” list. It prints but the margins are way bigger than the preview on the screen. I have been printing using both Finale & Sibelius with no issue regarding any page size. Are you guys using newer printers?
You should find that if you define 9.5"×12.5" as a custom size in the printer setup in System Settings, it will appear in Dorico.
Thanks ds, no luck though. I’m on a Mac, are you on a a PC? Here are 3 shots to illustrate.
- system page setup shows printer & custom size.
- Dorico setup showing my HP printer
- Dorico setup list with my custom size absent
So right now for me Dorico is not showing any of the custom sizes I have in my system. I’m hoping someone from Dorico weighs in with an explanation.
planation.
Ok I’m trying to attach it here, the forum would not permit it. Thanks ds!
(Attachment Finale file for ds.musx is missing)
(In case it’s not obvious, I am somebody “from Dorico”, as I’m Dorico’s product manager.)
Could you do Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the resulting zip file here? If Dorico is able to find a paper size supported by your printer that matches the page size of your layout, it should in theory log something out to the application.log
file, so I can have a look and see if I can find any evidence of that.
FWIW, I’ve never been able to solve this either, on PC or Mac. I always create PDFs for everything anyway, so don’t really mind the extra step, but without being able to access the system print settings, I just can’t print on 9.5x12.5.

Thanks ds and sorry, after my last post I saw your name in the company directory.
Attached is the zip file you requested. FYI, the part print I tried to make was formatted for 9.5x12.5, however you’ll find the score is formatted for 11x15. That’s just standard fare in my world. It has never been a problem in the “other” programs. Though I must say the “other” two have never been as accommodating as the Dorico folks!

Thanks, I’m a newbee. Can’t you tell?
Thanks for attaching the diagnostics. I can see that Dorico is indeed managing to find a few custom page sizes, e.g. Architect A (otherwise known as 9"×12"), so the mechanism in general is working, but because Qt doesn’t know about 9.5"×12.5", it’s not going to appear as a choice. I’ll discuss this issue with the team again in the New Year and see whether there’s something more we can do here.
Thanks ds! I can’t overstate that sizes like 9.5x12.5, 10x13 and others are staples in the commercial & symphonic world in the US. I happened to see that a west coast writer that sells some nice film templates has his parts formatted to 9x12 rather than 9.5x12.5 and I couldn’t understand why, but perhaps this explains it.
I’m well aware of how commonly used these paper sizes are. They are, indeed, defined as default sizes in the software. The issue is with the underlying application framework that Dorico relies on.
Hi Daniel,
I see with interest that version 6 is being planned for later this year. I’m hoping that the custom page issue is being considered. Another thing that I have not seen anyone mention is backward compatibility.
As Dorico gains traction in the commercial music prep world I can the possibility of needing to hire users that may not have updated yet. The ability for a copyist supervisor to save a file to version 5 to send to a colleague would be a welcome feature.
Thanks, Tony
Dorico has always taken backwards compatibility very seriously into account. You can open a Dorico 5.1.81 file in Dorico 2. The missing bits will be those things that didn’t exist back then.
Thanks Marc, that’s good news. Being a new user I remembered the earlier days of Finale & Sibelius when it was not always the case.
