Rhythm Slashes Not Showing?

Hi, new Dorico user here (switching over from Musescore 4)

I’m having some issues with rhythm slashes/slash regions. Any time there’s supposed to be a slash on my score, they just don’t show up. After some quick googling, I can’t seem to find anyone else with the same issue. Could there possibly be a setting that I’ve accidentally checked?

Running Dorico Pro 5 on Mac M1

Proto Cosmos.dorico (744.2 KB)

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum @Chris_Schiavoni.

I’m not sure exactly how to fix this, but it’s to do with your Default Music Font.

If you go to the Music Font dialog and change the font to Bravura, the slashes will reappear. I’m not sure how else to fix it (while keeping your Finale font), sorry.

I don’t have any issues with newly created files (Dorico 5.1.51) with any of the jazz fonts concerning slash regions. But I was able to recreate the issue — can you check what your Notehead Sets => category “Slashes” => Oversized Slash Noteheads looks like?

Also, the file you posted looks perfectly normal on my computer as well, as well as the Notehead Set => Oversized Slash… (which the “slash region” fetches the slash symbol = notehead from).

So echoing Daniel above, a way to troubleshoot this would be to change the music font (Library => Music Fonts…) and change it to something else, the simplest (and most complete set) would be the top one “Bravura”. Does it make the slashes appear?

EDIT: this would point to a font issue as well — do you have a complete “Finale Maestro” font installed on your system? You may get the Finale fonts e.g. here: https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500013053461-MakeMusic-Fonts-and-Licensing-Information

Finale Maestro is bundled with Dorico since version 5.

Evidently that worked pretty well in the OP’s case. The .pkg available from MakeMusic website installs all the relevant SMuFL Finale fonts and is an easy way to exclude a faulty font installation issue without a need of reinstalling Dorico in its entirety.

It appears that I don’t have anything under oversized slash noteheads, similar to your screenshot. How can I get a slash inserted into one of the slots?

This would imply that the Finale Jazz (the font that houses all the characters Dorico needs, including individual noteheads) is somehow incomplete.

Before moving forward, can you (save a copy first) change the Music Font for the entire project to Bravura (Library => Music Fonts…) and see if the problem persists?

I just changed to Bravura, everything’s good now.

Edit: Upon changing back to Finale Jazz, slashes are now showing. I have no clue why.

Just for science, can you take a screenshot of the version where the slashes are showing in the “Finale Jazz” version? Preferably something zoomed in to the slashes (couple of systems suffice).

EDIT: also, very weirdly, when I tried to open your file again on my Dorico, this time the slashes are not showing on my computer either. (The first time I tried, with screenshot above as proof, the slashes appeared normally.)

Sure thing:
