Can anyone show me how to route audio AND MIDI to a VST plugin ?
In my case I’m looking to use Arturia V Vocoder inside VST Live. This plugin needs audio (e.g. a microphone signal) and MIDI (keyboard) to work correct.
In my installation of VST Live “Essentials” the plugin says that it has no audio signal routed to its inputs, and i can’t find a way/menu/documentation to do that.
Should that be also a limitation of the “essentials” version ?
I use Arturia Vocoder V. You can only load audio VSTs into the Stack inserts. Instruments, like Vocoder V, do not appear on the list. In Layers, the instrument won’t see available audio inputs. When VST Live 2 was released, I asked about it. It was stated that the sidechain is something that should work within this version, but was still not ready for prime time.
Hi,
I want to use Maschine for some live loop recording and Perform FXs.
And I thought Audio IN for VST Instruments (or Sidechain) is a Standard function nowadays.
In Cubase there are several opportunities for configuration.
But both is not possible for one shared layer, because this audio input (Sidechain) for VST Instruments is still not realized. So for now, I bought VST Live Pro to just realize this.
Thx.
I did some research.
To use VST Instrument Audio inputs for Sampling in Cubase you need:
use it as an insert VST, or use side chaining.
For me it would be a good idea for VST live pro, to give a layer switchable audio input + routing to the mixer opportunities.
Hi! Sidechaining is promissed and I’m sure they’re working on it and will release when it’s working 100% stable.
Also please note:
VST Live is != Cubase
Also the prg internal structure also seems to be different - and developers also mentioned several times - it’s not possible to “copy-paste” such functions.
Thank you fkalmus for your fast reply and
a thank you to the responsible steinberg team
for the coming “side chaining” feature .
You’re totally right: VST LIVE is not CUBASE! (This is good for live!)
CUBASE and “Live performing” I tried this one, long ago
It was going too much in a direction “Cubase comparison”, unintentionally.
Sorry for that. I am “brand new” to VST Live but “really old” to Cubase and some other kind of DAWs for Studio work.
So here we should talk about the already fantastic “live” possibilities of VST Live 2 … and which function we are/may missing and as a result this could be fantastic to unleash the power of VST live 2 “live” performing with “live” DJ content.
In one sentence:
I definitely miss "Live DJ’ing with “Live WAV content” from a “Live band” to realize with VST Live 2 and a VST software like NI Maschine or Ableton Live using the song structure features of VST Live efficiently.
I would like to put this in a new topic, 'cause it is not only about side chaining or routing at all or alone.
And it may need some more words what I am thinking of in detail.
But shortly:
It is about how could a live-DJ be integrated with his band to VST Live 2 and its very well thought “song/part-layer/stacks” structure and playlists to benefit from. And there are already some ideas for a better integration of VSTs like NI machine or even Ableton live in the community, I guess.
I already have some!
And for me - this topic would be one of the most important “live” features - of VST Live 2 for live bands/ musicians working with DJs or DJ-like sound and song features.
I’m using Autotune and it seems that the process is the same.
Please see below how I managed to use the plugin:
First, go to Devices > Connections menu and create a virtual MIDI In and Out (in my case, I’m using Virtual MIDI 2 for “Autotune In” and “Autotune Out”)
Now, in the track view, create a new MIDI track containing the MIDI notes you want to be automatically played with your plugin and set the MIDI Output to “Autotune Out”.
I think of 2 cases here:
a normal DJ performs:
depending on the setup, not as much benefits I think, but one could use song-part structure for automation loading new loop and FXs chains for a more structured and easy to use user interface, when the performance is changing a lot (only for VSTs).
But for this, then the missing Ableton link - variable speed - would maybe be the “killer” argument?
Live performance DJ + band (+ some tempo fixed playback parts):
setup integration for all songs, automation and all the other features are also available for the DJ using Maschine and some features for external gear too! Most bands are playing with a tempo fixed playback or click track.
This could be a huge benefit, preparing and performing a show, in my opinion.
Focussing on the vocoder theme… The Arturia Vocoder is not an effect is an instrument und if you change from sample to live input, there is a message: Unknown Host, Please refer you DAW user manual to check how to route an audio track into your instrument. Is this the missing sidechain or is there another way ? thanks Ralf
It depends how you look at it - it could be considered a vocal effect. Certainly using it as an insert on a vocal channel should work. I went with the free TAL vocoder (TAL Software) as an insert using virtual MIDI and it works a treat . Of course it would be a completely different story if you wanted to uses a different sound source as the carrier.
