Sample Editor Link Button

Can someone (maybe Steinberg) please explain where the link button is in the sample editor, which the only video I can find explains exists ( Cubase 14 Pro)

Hi,

What kind of link do you mean, please?

Can you link the video or make a screenshot from the video, or explain, what should this button do?

It’s a good video, and Greg is awesome, it’s just I have Cubase 14. I’m trying to learn and practice zooming (which is probably one of the most important things to learn how to do effectively and efficiently in Cubase). I looked in the manual, and I don’t see anything about linking the zooming.

Hi,

So do you want to Zoom In the waveform in the Sample Editor? if this is the case, you can use the Shift + H to Zoom In Vertically, Shift + G to Zoom Out Vertically, or use the same control, which has been shown in the video.

Thanks. So I am assuming there used to be a ā€œlinkā€ button that would link the zooming of the sample editor to the project window. I guess it doesn’t exist anymore. I noticed it still exists in the midi editor. Steinberg needs to understand it is things like this that frustrate and deture new users to Cubase.

Hi,

Could you make a screenshot of the button, please?

Photos are the best I can do. The first photo shows the midi editor with the ā€œlinkā€ button. The second photo shows the sample editor which does not have a link button and there is no option for one when setting up the toolbar.

There is a fundamental difference in the design concept between what the Key Editor displays and what the Sample Editor displays - and I am not talking about the difference of midi and audio.
But I don’t want to bother you with a sad story. Just know that, because of this design choice from many decades ago, the Sample Editor cannot be linked to the project view. Steinberg would need to abandon the Sample Editor for something like an Audio Object Editor.
At least that is my understanding of it.

So, it is not so much the lack of having the idea but rather that they trapped themselves into that corner long time ago and can’t easily get out of it.

I actually hope I am wrong in my assessment.

@Johnny_Moneto I think you might be right. I watched the video again and it looks like only the midi editor is being linked to the project window. I am trying to learn zooming in general, so it can be confusing and I may be missing out on some of the minor details. I knew this was going to be one of the more challenging aspects of Cubase for me!

Hi,

The Vertical Zoom is not synced between the Project window (Arranger area) and the Key Editor.

The Zoom (Horizontal) can be synced, thanks to the Link Project and Lower Zone Editor Cursor button. This button is not available in the Sample Editor (as @Johnny_Moneto correctly pointed out). This button is available in the Key Editor, Drum Editor and Audio Part Editor only.

The first thing I would do is to assign key commands to certain zoom commands.
Here are mine e.g.

I am using the the Alt+{number} and Alt+S commands the most. Also Undo Zoom is a godsend.
Note that some of the zoom commands use the keys G and H. This is ok for an old Cubase fart like myself because Cubase used those keys since 1989 and I actually try to zoom every app and OS with G and H but you might want to change them to something that you prefer.
The rest I usually do with the mouse wheel (Ctrl/Cmd + mouse wheel and Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + mouse wheel).

There are other methods, so it is just an example but it allows me to navigate the project rather quickly. There are also visibility presets that one can use. I like how this guy uses his Cubase:

@Johnny_Moneto Thanks. The mouse wheel commands are going to help a lot. Believe it or not, the " zoom undo" was the first key command I created because I was inadvertently clicking on things before I understood what I was doing and realized that the ā€œglobal undoā€ does not undo zooms

There are different undos in Cubase:

  • project undo (Ctrl/Cmd + Z)
  • MixConsole undo, includes effect plugins (Alt/Opt + Z)
  • visibility undo
  • zoom undo

Cubase is full of such marvels. ← not even meant sarcastically

Zoom Mem/Zap can be super helpful as well. Especially if incorporated in macros.

Nice. Thanks for posting… (what a good guy; what a story, with the fire and all…)

Can only imagine this has to be essential, additional kit to navigate/manage these 1000+ track projects and stay sane..! Impressive.

Indeed - I hadn’t seen that video either. What stood out for me was the comment ā€œthere’s a bit of a learning curve, but now I can be creative again.ā€

On the same path (from Logic to Cubendo) and also somewhat ā€œtrappedā€ between engineer and artist, this really resonated with me. It really has been the best of both worlds for me as well.
