SATB choir with piano accompaniment

I have different parts that have switched from soprano to tenor. I was wondering if there is a way to replicate what the music looks like attached into Dorico?

Also, I would like to see if I can add a staff above like it does in the second image as well?

Hiding empty staves would probably fix this.

Where would I even start? This is what I have so far…

Layout Options>Vertical Spacing>Staff Visibility

So what else would you do to solve this? I am still confused how making staffs invisible would solve this issue.

I’m not sure what else to add. Hiding empty staves hides them! If they are not empty, they will be shown.

What I meant to say is how would you replicate what the images show you in Dorico?

Probably very easily, but without a file to work on, I doubt you will get a more useful response.

How can I share the file with you?

You can upload it (drag it onto your post) if you want the forum big brain to solve your problem.

Well, if you put the notes on the Tenor (at 25) you will get this…

Here’s the shortened set of instructions:

  1. Input all of your notes into proper staves for each voice part. (Separate parts for S, A, T, B, etc.)
  2. ADD two additional generic “voice” parts and re-name one Soprano/Alto and the other Tenor/Bass. Whenever you have music that you want to be combined all men or all women, use these staves, rather than the separate S A T B staves.
  3. Once you’ve finished all your note entry, turn on “hide empty staves” in the layout options, and put system breaks wherever you need changes to occur from one stave to another. Some manual work will be required here, otherwise you’ll end up with changes mid-stave which will force both instruments to be shown on the affected staves.

The hide empty staves feature will then hide all unwanted staves, and labeling will be correct automatically. (at least if you use labels in the left margins)

To add labels above staves as shown there, it’s honestly faster to just do those by hand with shift-x text. Either create a paragraph style and apply it, or create them once and then just copy and paste them where you want them.

(And, I’ll humbly suggest that you change the piano’s short name to just be a single empty space so it is no longer labeled after the first stave. It doesn’t need a label in this type of score.)
