Hi everyone! Just ran across a super interesting issue (Cubase Pro 14 on macOS Tahoe) and was wondering if anyone could help me diagnose.
When using the Score Editor to view a MIDI clip in one of my projects, a “repeated” G# note written only in bar 6 extends all the way to bar 8… and I have no idea why.
I will, of course, attach my project file once I figure out how to do that… but in the meantime, here’s what it looks like in screenshots:
I can confirm that this same issue happens when exporting the MIDI and opening it in Dorico Pro 6. Opening that same MIDI file in Sibelius Ultimate 2025.8 yields the expected note duration, without the G# note extending into bars 7 and 8.
The notes are quantized to the grid, both at their beginnings and at their ends, meaning nothing should be overlapping. When deleting the repeated G# note and extending the previous one into bar 6, the Score Editor does show the duration correctly in that case.
If anyone here knows what the issue could be, your help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Hi @lexxabeats
first of all, I can confirm that I am experiencing this same effect. I entered your measures into an empty project, and the result is exactly the same:
Oh wow, okay, glad to hear this isn’t just me then. Thank you so much @P.A.T!
When I was initially testing this, I have tried lengthening the note and then shortening it back, which changed nothing. I just tried your process (shorten and then lengthen), which also hasn’t changed anything, regardless whether I had snapping to grid enabled or not. So I started experimenting.
I shortened/lengthened the G# as well as various surrounding notes, playing around with different combinations and trying to remove as much as possible without affecting behaviour.
I think that this time, I managed to reduce it to the smallest possible subset of notes for real. Here’s what I have now:
When moving around the end of the A note, it seems to affect the duration of the G# note as well. I’m not sure if there’s an exact pattern to it, but it looks like the notes are being somehow “grouped together” under certain conditions.
Later, I will try to play around with this a little more… but in the meantime, thank you so much for all your help!
This is clearly a bug in the score editor.
I also experimented a bit more with your score today and discovered, for instance, that shortening the long B note (referred to as ‘H’ in German notation) causes the G# to revert to the correct duration.
In other words, there are interdependencies between the displayed note durations that shouldn’t be there.
